Kristan McCormick, national strategist, shelter collaborative program
As a national strategist, Kristan works to match up partners for the shelter collaborative program and support peer mentors and fellows implementing proven practices for shelter operations and lifesaving programs. Kristan began her career in animal welfare more than a decade ago as an intern and volunteer for Best Friends, focusing on animal care, emergency response work and large-scale events. She went on to work at different organizations, gaining experience in adoption, transport and volunteer programs, shelter operations and a community spay/neuter clinic. Kristan has been with Best Friends for more than eight years as one of the founding team members to establish the local foster and adoption program in New York and to support the opening of the Best Friends NYC Lifesaving Center. Kristan has also supported Best Friend's national embed, mentorship programs and most recently was a part of the Best Friend's Network team managing operational projects that assist the 3,400+ shelters, rescue groups and intake prevention groups that comprise the Network. Kristan lives in New York with her husband, a dachshund named Little and a floofy cat named Finn. She's excited to use her skills to help shelters feel supported through the shelter collaborative program and become further integrated into Best Friend's goal of No-Kill 2025.
