Abby Kilani is Best Friend’s new Regional Engagement and Research Internship intern.

Abby’s journey in animal welfare began in 2021 when she adopted her current dog from Chicago Animal Care and Control. A lifelong animal lover, she spent years walking dogs and pet sitting throughout college before becoming a shelter volunteer. However, after visiting the shelter and seeing firsthand the stress many dogs experience, she felt the need to get involved.

Since then, Abby has been an active dog volunteer, routinely walking dogs and participating in agility and nose work programs at CACC, providing enrichment for long-term and high-stress shelter dogs. Abby also collaborates with Safe Humane Chicago, assisting with corporate volunteer days to educate groups about the city's shelter animals and the importance of humane treatment.

Beyond hands-on work, Abby engages in community welfare initiatives, including vaccine clinics and adoption events; expanding  access to essential resources and helping animals find loving homes. She strongly believes in the critical role of spay and neuter clinics, as well as the power of community education and outreach to keep pets with their families.

She hopes to use  data, research and outreach to improve shelter outcomes, reduce euthanasia rates, and advocate for policy changes that benefit animals and their communities.

Abby currently resides in Chicago with her dog Mac.
