In Defense of Animals (IDA), a non profit organization involved in animal rights, has been working since 1983 to increase awareness of animals used in research.
Posted by MJ Smith, Best Friends Network VolunteerOne of the campaigns IDA is working on is Vivisection. The practice of performing experiments on living animals continues to be an issue even with great advances in medical research tools. Today, more than 90 percent of medical schools in the United States have eliminated animal laboratories from their curricula, but some still practice on live animals that are then typically sacrificed.
IDA is dedicated to protecting animals from suffering and educating the public. They are a source for information on animal rights materials, including those on animal abuse, animals in entertainment, puppy mills, exotic birds, and veganism. In addition they participate in a horse rescue program whereby they care for horses who are victims of severe abuse or neglect in partnership with Cliffrose Ranch in Snowflake, Arizona.

The
Medical College of Wisconsin was pressured by both the Wisconsin Humane Society and IDA (thousands of people) last year to end the practice of animal laboratory testing (dogs)…………………….. In response, the Medical College chose to use pigs instead for 2008. They still defend the right to use animals in their teaching.
