Students organize raffe to raise funds for Kevlar vest.
When news that a Vancouver Police canine officer was shot and killed in the line of duty, Nicole Ferrett, an eighth grader at Stoller Middle School in Beaverton, Oregon decided something had to be done to protect these loyal four-legged officers. Nicole is a member of Stoller’s Rebels with a Cause, a group of students that volunteer for community service projects under the supervision of teacher Logan Storm.
And their cause became Kevlar vests for the Washington county Sheriff's Office canine unit. These vests, which are custom fit for each dog, cost about $1,000 each. Nicole and her fellow students collected merchandise and gift cards from local merchants, and is promoting a raffle to raise the funds.
How you can help:Contact your local law enforcement office to determine if the canine unit has life-saving Kevlar vests. There may be several law enforcement units in your area: city, county and state.
If vests are not available, plan a fund-raising event to raise the money for this hard-working canine.
