Sometimes people that are serious animal lovers get stuck in a pattern of thinking – they feel the only way to truly help the animals is to start a sanctuary. Well, there are a LOT of other ways to help!

This past fall we had some very special visitors to the Welcome Center! Heather & Bob Raasveld brought their very large family to visit from Las Vegas. Although, instead of strollers and car seats, they had collars and leashes!

Last summer, we had two very special ladies visit Best Friends from Portland, Oregon, and all due to a school report! Who says school isn’t fun!?

Cathy Ramsey is one amazing woman, and the animals are lucky to have her! She became a pet groomer 36 years ago, and grooming has served as a backbone for her work with the animals ever since. Throughout the years, in addition to working as a groomer, she would go and volunteer her grooming services in shelters wherever she and her husband were living at the time.

Most visitors travel to Best Friends by automobile, some by motorcycle and a few by bicycle, but big 18 wheeler semi-trucks are rare (unless they’re delivering pet food!).

It’s the time of year when “Back To School Sales” are happening in stores all around the nation, and kids are being reluctantly dragged through store aisles by their anxious and excited moms and dads. Here at Best Friends, a similar fever is taking place in Dogtown and Dogtown Heights…it’s called CGC – or Canine Good Citizen.

Anne Corrigan decided to celebrate her 54th birthday this year in an extra-ordinary way by inviting her best friends to help our “Best Friends” here at the Sanctuary. Instead of expecting gifts Anne asked her friends to contribute cash and gift cards (based on our Wish List) for the animals and used her party as a fundraiser.

If you look up the word “volunteer” in the dictionary, don’t be surprised if you see a picture of Margarete Hartmann! Margarete moved from California to Kanab, specifically to volunteer with Best Friends. Since she’s been here, she has done all kinds of things at the Sanctuary.

Not to be upstaged by the pot-bellied pigs, GrandPa Bernie, one of the Sanctuary’s senior burros, made a repeat visit to the Welcome Center, this time stepping inside!! Everybody loves old Bernie! You can’t miss him! He never misses an opportunity to meet folks coming down to the Best Friend’s pastures. He whinnies to greet you (or as a reminder that it’s chow time) and his nose is always stuck out for a scratch.

When you were a kid, don’t you remember how you wished for summer to come early or prayed for a snowstorm announcement so that you could have a break from school and homework!? Well, Jarad, Tim and Deborah Lowrance’s 10-year old grandson, hit the jackpot when both his schoolteacher and his mother gave him special permission to miss school for a few days this past September to visit Best Friends. Prior to their visit, Jarad and his grandparents had arranged to bring three special needs dogs requiring medical treatment and care to the Sanctuary. During their stay, they acquired information on our housing and care concepts for the animals.
