Court Approves Sending 22 of the Michael Vick Dogs to Best Friends

December 7, 2007 : 4:32 PM
"They deserve the very best we can give them."

December 6, 2007 -- Judge Henry Hudson of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia has approved a recommendation by a guardian/special master appointed by the court that 22 of the 48 American pit bull terriers connected with the Michael Vick civil forfeiture action be placed with Best Friends Animal Society.

Valparaiso University School of Law Professor Rebecca J. Huss, in a Summary Report to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, recommended that 47 dogs (one has been euthanized for medical reasons) be placed with eight organizations, with Best Friends receiving the most dogs (22). The next largest group would be placed with Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls (BAD RAP) of Oakland, Calif. (10). Other organizations that would receive dogs are Richmond Animal League of Richmond, Va. (4); Georgia SPCA of Suwanee, Ga. (3); SPCA of Monterey County, Calif. (3); Recycled Love Inc. of Baltimore, Md. (3); Animal Rescue of Tidewater, Chesapeake, Va. (1); and PACK (Pit Bull Advocates for Compassion and Kindness), San Francisco, Calif. (1).

“The court has granted Best Friends the opportunity to do what it does best —provide a caring, rehabilitative home for these abused, homeless animals,” said Paul Berry, chief executive officer of Best Friends. “They deserve the very best that we can give them, and we are prepared to provide a safe place for them to stay for the rest of their lives.”

“The pit bull is easily the most misunderstood breed of dog in the U.S.,” Berry said. “Unfortunately, it is the very loving and loyal nature of these dogs that makes them prone to exploitation.”

Huss expressed confidence in Best Friends and the other rescue organizations recommended for placement. “For the dogs that may need to remain in a sanctuary environment, although there will certainly be a period of adjustment, I believe that these dogs will not just survive, but thrive in that environment.”

The report was prepared during multiple visits by Huss to Virginia, where she interacted with the dogs and their caretakers, and spoke with animal control officers and numerous rescue organizations, including Best Friends.

In July, the United States filed a civil forfeiture action relating to approximately 53 American pit bull terriers located on the property of Michael Vick. The court appointed Huss as guardian/special master of the 48 surviving dogs.

About Best Friends Animal Society

Founded in 1986, Best Friends is home to approximately 2,000 displaced, homeless dogs, cats, birds, horses and other domestic animals. Among the more than 600 dogs that reside at Best Friends are 160 special needs dogs that receive expert, compassionate care. Best Friends was responsible for helping to rescue 6,000 dogs and cats during Hurricane Katrina. Following earthquakes in Peru and floods in Mexico, the organization dispatched rapid response animal rescue teams to help, and continues to rescue animals from emergency situations throughout the United States.

Best Friends are my heros. Watching Dogtown made me cry and cry with such happiness that these sweet babies are being taken care of and getting love, love and more love. Vick will have his day... karma will get him eventually. Thank You Best Friends!

Thank God for Best Friends who are helping to save at least 22 of the dogs abused by the "Big Man", that moronic sicko Michael Vick. I hope he gets a taste of the abuse he dished out to helpless cretures who only want to be a companion to people, but he will probably be a hero to his sociopathic buddies in the slammer. The best we can hope for is he loses millions and never plays again. By the way I am a retired social worker with 3 rescued APBTs-our profession usually has compassion for others but not in this case. Pit bulls and Am staffs have an undeserved reputtion-it's bad owners, not bad dogs.

I just read on Chef Curly's story on the main page that the judge named all the dogs..I find that very interesting! I wonder how he came up with the names. Did he meet them? Or looked at their pictures, then picked their names? Hmmm..

Hope to see updates on Vick's dogs. Especially the female I have read about. Georgia was her name. I have read stories about her rolling toys with her nose until it was skinned up and just barking at her dog house for no reason. I would love to hear an update on her.

I am so relieved to see that the dogs are in a safe loving environment. After all the torment and torchure they have endured, they deserve a new start. As for Vick and his coherts, punishment cannot be servere enough.

Thanks Emily...I liked that video! I loved Abby's mom.
I am really curious as to what Vick did with those Beagles. I had no idea he had those other dogs.

I'm told the dogs coming to BF have already been named. Since they were referred to during the legal proceedings by number, I'm so glad they were given names by the people who have been caring for them. I'm really anxious to hear that they've made it safely to Kanab! I imagine that will take some time but it will be like a homecoming to a place they've never seen before...

EmilyS - thank you for both of those links. I had to fight back some tears of joy. That facility in Washington is quite a place...wow.

I'm really looking forward to hearing how well all the dogs will do wih time and some good ol' TLC. I think having so many dogs survive an ordeal like this is probably unheard of in legal circles and would really like to believe that some good comes from all of this.

hmmm, maybe we should name some of the dogs after the most avid pit bull killers: Ingrid[Newkirk]; Wayne[Pacelle]; Tom[Skeldon, ToledoACO]; Kory[Nelson, Denver assist city attorney] But such people don't deserve the association.

Wonderful idea of naming the dogs SDM. That is an awesome idea. I sure hope someone that has the power to make it happen reads this post!
I think it is only fitting that they be named like that.

WONDERFUL IDEA!!!!

As a former street dog (not a fighting dogger) I think that Auntie Brie's idea of naming them mistreatered doggers after cities and states is a most excellent idea. They will really represent the whole America and all them doggers that didn't get the best end of the rawhide. They will be those ambassadors of all the u s of a's states who have doggers that are bred for that fighting nonesense ...give them some representation.

Jiminy - who thinks Southerndogmom is so smart.

I love the idea of naming the dogs after cities! Maybe we could name them after misguided places that have banned pit bulls, like Denver.

I'm actually hoping they'll be named after cities and states, as they will surely become ambassadors for an objectified, abused and misunderstood breed of dog.

So very many fighting dogs seized by law enforcement officials in cities and counties are euthanized when they could be saved. Cities and counties just don't have the money to "deal" with them even when they could be saved with enough money and the right amount of care.

Diego, Phillie, Detroit, Dallas, Vegas, Austin, Miami, Boston, Denver...you get the idea.

Thank you, Best Friends-for being there when animals need you most. I'm looking forward to knowing these precious dogs have been given new names, instead of the court appointed numbers. They DO deserve the very best, and we all know that is with you.
