166 Dogs Seized from Bancroft, Ontario Area

April 9, 2008 : 11:46 AM
Charges are pending against owner of suspected puppy mill.

Last week, 166 dogs were taken from an alleged puppy mill and animal cruelty charges are pending against the Bancroft area facility’s owner. A search warrant was issued following an ongoing investigation by the Ontario SPCA, which has received numerous complaints about this particular individual for 12 years. Prior seizures have occurred; however, compliance on behalf of the accused has resulted in the return of the animals.

Special protection was necessary for the team investigating the facility due to poor ventilation and dogs were found “wading in liquid feces.” The seized animals include beagles, Pekinese, poodles, and terriers, who were described to be in “very poor condition.” Various dogs were found to be anemic, dehydrated, lethargic, and infested with parasites and some required immediate medical attention. They have now been distributed among a network of rescue organizations throughout the province until their future custody is determined.

“This case was a large seizure, involving deplorable conditions and severe neglect,” noted Kristin Williams of the Ontario SPCA. “Provincial offense charges are currently pending. The Ontario SPCA has a very strong case.”

Charges are currently pending under the Ontario SPCA Act. If the seizure is judged to be warranted by the Animal Care Review Board, the suspect may be forced to relinquish the animals, who would then be offered for adoption. If found to be guilty, the accused may face a penalty of up to two years in prison and/or a fine of up to $60,000.

They won't be getting one dog back and that's for sure! I adopted my little Bobby almost three weeks ago from the Kingston Humane Society. Bobby was rescued from Bancroft, but now she has her home with my husband and I and our Great Pyrenese Willy.

I sincerely hope this time "compliance on bahelf of the accused" will be met with something other than the return of these poor animals.
