Mascot Controversy at Texas A&M

March 11, 2008 : 9:52 AM
New Reveille may break recent tradition and return to the original.

If ever a school was enveloped in tradition, it would be Texas A&M. Recently though, the university is interested in increasing its diversity and that concept may be extended to it new mascot. Reveille VII, the current mascot at Texas A&M, is retiring and there is now a storm of controversy surrounding her successor.

A committee is being formed to select a Reveille VIII and many Aggies are calling for change. The current Reveille and five of her predecessors have all been purebred American collies. While many wish to carry on the collie tradition, in a recent poll by the Bryan-College Station Eagle newspaper, the majority of respondents would like to return to the original, as Reveille I was a mixed breed mutt.

If they do choose to continue the collie tradition, let’s hope A&M decides to adopt a dog from one of the Texas collie rescues:
Houston Collie Rescue
Collie Rescue Austin
DWF Collie Rescue
Collie Rescue San Antonio

Otherwise, there are literally thousands of homeless canines to choose from at local animal shelters who would be honored to be the new Reveille VIII.

Read this great opinion piece, written by Amanda Kiser, a Texas A&M senior in sociology, on why the school should choose a shelter dog instead of a purebred, Let other schools use purebreds.

They will be heroes helping to raise awareness about the plight of homeless animals if they turn to a rescue or shelter animals. Let's hold the vision for that!!

As a class of 1977 graduate from TAMU I am thrilled at the debate about choosing the next Reveille. There are millions of companion animals without homes and to be able to recognize this fact through selecting the next mascot from a pound or rescue group would highlight the needs of these animals. After spending weeks of my time at a New Orleans animal shelter after Hurricane Katrina, the plight of homeless dogs has became very focused for me. I hope the committee considers the tradition of inclusion, need, and doing the right thing when they make a choice for Reveille VIII. Their choice could very well begin a trend of other organizations selecting shelter animals for high-profile positions.
