MYPAW, Milwaukee Youth Promoting Animal Welfare, is comprised of youth from Milwaukee Public High Schools enrolled in Sponsor-A-Scholar through the downtown branch of the YMCA.
This summer a group of students from MYPAW volunteered at Best Friends and shared some of their experiences and photos with us. It was an enlightening experience for the group and they have already booked to return with a larger group next year.
Check out the great video they put together

By Katherine
“My experience at Best Friends was truly like no other. Not only did I have the opportunity to expand my understanding of the safety of animals, but I also learned that I am not the only person out there that cares about animals. Before I had actually stepped into the Best Friend grounds, the experience seemed as, yet another vacation to add to my list this summer. However, meeting a few of the original founders, having a sleepover with one of the dogs named Bessie, volunteering to walk dogs, and even mucking horse manure helped me understand why we, MYPAW, promote the spay and neuter and the wellbeing of animals. We do this in order for animals to have a better life. Animals were not placed on this Earth to be hurt, and especially not to be disregarded. That is why I agree with every opportunity a pet gets by being adopted by a worthy friend. As I walked through Best Friends every day, I understood the hope and motivation that each person there carried concerning the safety of the animals’ future. Unlink many others, the founders, staff, and volunteers have realized that animals are under our care to protect. Following their example, I will be glad to expand people’s education on matters regarding the happiness of animals. Even though animal sanctuaries, like Best Friends, are established to assist the animals, I would rather see animals protected with out the need for these organizations. I want to know that animals are being treated properly and humanely. I will find comfort knowing that like us, animals have a safe world to live in.”
