The Kimba Shelter: Five galgos fly to Belgium

March 12, 2008 : 12:37 PM
Thanks to Galgo Aid Europe

By Maria Jose Jaen, Guest writer, Kimba Shelter

Translated by Michael Rodrigue, Best Friends Network

Today our partners Carmina, Anita and Julio left for the Malaga airport with our beautiful galgos "Alegría", "Torqeumada", "Cid", Tulipán", and "Ágata", who were all leaving for Belgium thanks to our wonderful sister organization who helps us to find families for them (GALGO AID EUROPE).

Accompanying these five precious creatures as a flight companion today was our friend Willy, who is the father of two beautiful and elegant galgos who also passed through Kimba quite some time ago (Moisés and Draco).

It is always very difficult to say good bye to a dog who has been at Kimba. We have seen them, and they have lived, in the worst of physical and psychological conditions when we rescue them. After spending a period of time with them to help them completely recover, having to say good bye is very sad. But we keep in mind that animal protection shelters are transitional places. Our job is finished when the rescued animal reaches a good family.

Today, for us, was a day of happiness, sadness, and also of shame.

Happiness because these poor galgos, some rescued while roaming along the highway in Chiclana (Ágata, Tulipán and Torquemada), others as strays eating from the garbage in the center of Chiclana (Cid), and our beautiful Algería, with the threat from her miserable galguero [hunter who uses hunting dogs..Ed] that if we did not take her into Kimba he would kill her. We are happy because we were able to change their destinies (to what should be the destinies of all galgos in Spain).

Sadness because after today we will only see them in photos, and we will have to be happy in just hearing news about them.

Shame because they have to leave their country so as not to end up dead alongside some highway, in a field or in a hunting preserve, or slaughtered in a dog pound.

And yet we still hear that galgueros take care of their galgos. We do not deny that, however we ought to ask that "nice galguero" where his galgos are who more than 2 or 3 years old, or where the litters are that were of no use to him for hunting or racing.

Those of us who defend animals, and in particular those of us who are aware of the holocaust that the galgos suffer in Spain, will really enjoy the photos.

Have a lovely trip and a wonderful life, dear friends!!!!!
