ARES has found his forever family!!

October 26, 2007 : 6:47 PM
Udate: Ares has found his forever family in the mountains outside of Madrid. He was adopted in mid January, and at last will have the life that he deserves to have. Many thanks to Elena and all of the others who worked so hard to keep Ares alive and well while waiting for a family.

Below is the original story of Ares from 2007.

This is the story of a wonderful and very affectionate dog named Ares. Nobodoy knows where they all come from, or how they end up roaming the streets as puppies, looking for food to survive. Nobody knows where they sleep at night, or how they find shelter from the cold.

In Spain, due to a lack of humane education, these poor stray dogs often become a target for cruelty. Young men will throw rocks at them, often causing permanent injuries or blindness. They are alone on the streets, hungry, scared, and trying to survive. Most of them have no idea what it feels like to be petted or have their backs scratched, never mind, what it feels like to be loved.

Ares was found roaming the streets of Madrid as a puppy. The kind person who found him said that he was completely exhausted and could not even stand on his feet, and so that person took him to a boarding kennel.

After several months at the kennel, Ares is like a new dog and once again has a strong will to live. The volunteers who care for him say that he made an amazing turn around. He is friendly, lovable and very playful, and seems to thrive on human contact.

Ares made a great recovery from his days on the streets of Madrid. He's now everybody's best friend and the volunteers are all very fond of him. But now he seems to realize that there is possibly more to life than living in a kennel. After his great recovery he now seems to have become a bit depressed with the mundane life at the kennel.

It is likely due to his size (people tend to want to adopt smaller dogs in Spain), but nobody ever seems interested in taking Ares home. Many of his roommates at the shelters have found their forever homes, some in Spain, others in France, Belgium, Germany and Holland.

This handsome guy has had all of his shots and is now just waiting for the perfect home, which he surely deserves after the rough start he had in life. Our good friend Elena goes to visit Ares several times per week, and she has sent excellent progress reports about him. Ares has his bags packed and is ready to go as soon as someone gives him the word.

If anyone is interested in this beautiful guy, please send an email to amigodekimba@gmail.com

Thank you for writing this wonderful report for Ares.

The work of Spanish rescue organisations and shelters is excellent and it's a shame they have so little help from the wider community there, it seems animal cruelty and neglect goes on and on in Spain with inadaquate support or intervention from authority figures and inefficient law to improve the lot of street animals. I hope Ares finds his forever home and enjoys the rest of his days in a happy home, he really deserves the very best and lots of love.

Thank you for keeping the plight of special dogs in the public eye, you do a tremendous job here in the Best Friends community :)

Spanish law makers must really take a long hard look at what is happening and take serious steps to improve animal welfare and help rescue shelters to expand their invaluable work.
