His last year was a very happy one for Cain

August 21, 2007 : 7:38 PM
I received the following story of Cain from Maria José of Refugio Kimba, about a dog who was adopted after spending nearly his entire life at the Kimba shelter. Before I was able to publish his story, we received the sad the news that Cain had died. It comforts us to know that he spent the final year of his life being showered with love and all kinds of comforts.

"Cain, is a large mixed breed dog who is now living happily in Holland (not to be confused with another dog also named Cain who is a galgo). His story is that they abandoned him as a puppy in a trash dumpster near our shelter. One of our volunteers heard a whimpering noise, went to investigate and found that it was a little puppy inside of a torn garbage bag. Thankfully, the puppy had been able to tear the plastic and therefore did not suffocate to death. After being rescued, he was taken to Kimba, and there he spent all of his youth. Many years passed and nobody ever seemed to want him. He was a happy dog at Kimba, played a lot with the other dogs, and one of his best friends was a dog named Boomerang, and Boomerang is now my dog.

A nice family from Holland took Cain after he was up in his adult years. He didn't get to have a home as a puppy nor as a young dog, but he had a wonderful change of luck when a very nice family adopted him in his senior years and they will give him all of the love that he deserved to have throughout his entire life."

Epilogue:

"We have had a very sad few days, since our dear Cain died in Holland, after spending a year in that beautiful country and living with a marvelous family. His kidneys gave out on him due to his disease (leishmania), one of the bad things we contend with here in this area. My poor little boy couldn't hold on any longer, and he left us."

I echo JLM's commment. Intelligence, dignity, and a wise soul shine from the eyes of Cain in the photo. Many thanks to Maria for this simple, direct, strong story--and to Michael for the translation.

What a beautiful, dignified dog. Makes me wonder how someone could pass him up in the shelter for all those years. Bless the people that gave Cain a happy, loving home his final year.

Thank you Maria for giving Cain the best year of his life. He held off dying so that he could be rescued by you and so that you could show him what it felt like to be loved. At least he left this world knowing that all humans aren't bad and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
