Bring a gift to benefit Carolina orphaned animals

April 22, 2007 : 12:00 AM
Carolina Wildlife Care, 5551 Bush River Road, is hosting a baby shower today.

from Carolina Wildlfe Care

The wildlife rehabilitation center cares for orphaned animals, including birds, squirrels, possums and reptiles. After nursing the orphaned animals to good health, they are released back into the wild.

From 1 to 4 p.m. today the community is invited to watch as the animals are fed and cared for by staff members and volunteers. Learn about the stories behind the patients’ arrivals and about what it takes to rehabilitate an animal.

The baby shower includes tours of the main rehabilitation room, exam room, reptile room, the songbird aviaries, flight cages and mammal habitats.

In the Turtle Park, the public will also meet nonreleasable wildlife that serve as the Center’s wildlife ambassadors.

Admission into the wildlife baby shower is a monetary donation or a gift from the Carolina Wildlife Care Wish List. The list is available online and includes everything from duct tape, latex gloves and pet food to laundry soap.

For more information about the event or volunteer opportunities call (803) 772-3994 or visit www.carolinawildlife.org.

Also today, Riverbanks Zoo, 500 Wildlife Parkway, is hosting Party for the Planet, an Earth Day celebration. The zoo opens at 9 a.m., and the festivities begin at 10.

Visitors are encouraged to bring empty cardboard paper towel rolls or cereal boxes. Participants will receive a free animal conservation tattoo.

Kid-friendly activities focusing on conservation will be hosted by the Riverbanks Zoo Teens in Palmetto Plaza. Some of the planned activities include building a toad abode and coloring an animal mask.

Children will also learn how to make a difference in their own backyards by applying conservation techniques at home.

Visitors will be able to see the animals benefit from enrichment activities. The elephants, baboons, gorillas and others will see, smell, touch and taste enrichment treats given to them by staff members.

Wildlife in action events are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Event schedules will be posted at the front gate and around the zoo.

All Earth Day activities are free with regular zoo admission. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Earth Day events are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call (803) 779-8717 or visit http://www.riverbanks.org.
