Miracle dog walks after being paralyzed less than 3 months ago!

Time to Celebrate: Ellie is walking!

Written by: Beth Mersten

Eleanor “Ellie” Roosevelt was a paralyzed dog after being hit by a car less than 3 months ago on Thanksgiving Eve 2007. Thanks to Dr. Karen Dashfield, Canine Aquatics and Ellie’s loving supporters, we are proud to announce that Ellie is now walking!

Ellie is available for adoption and looking for applicants. Ellie seems to do well with other dogs and takes a very short time to warm up to new people. Ellie loves belly rubs and could really enjoy living with adults and teenagers who want to play, give belly rubs and get kisses from Ellie.

Ellie wants to meet you and help other animals needing special care! Shelter Showcase is looking to plan a fundraiser with Ellie as the special guest and honoring her caregivers Dr. Karen Dashfield from On-Call Vets and Cindy Farbanish from Canine Aqautics & Fitness Center. Please email beth@sheltershowcase.com if you have project planning or event planning experience, want to help sponsor the costs of the event or if you want to be put on the "Invite Me!" special guest list. We'll keep you posted on the progress of this event.

Thank you to all those who donated to Ellie's care and made this miracle possible! To donate to Ellie's care and the care of other animals needing special care, please click here.

Any news on Ellie? How is she doing with her walking and running up hills? Any prospects for her being adopted soon?

Hi,
Latest on Ellie. She is walking all the time now and is doing regular hill climbs- even starting to run up the hill. She loves running down hill, and is starting to "romp" a lot of the time, galloping off in various directions to check out the smells. She still falls over on occasion, but is getting stronger all the time. We have started leaving her kennel door open during the daytime and she is learning to go outside into her large excercise run to go to the bathroom and stretch her legs.

When I read stories like this I get such a wonderful feeling. I love seeing animals treated the way they should always be treated; with such love and generosity. Thank you so much to everyone that helped Ellie get to where she is today. I have no doubt that she will find a warm, loving home.

Hi,
Ellie hasn't been in her cart for almost 2 weeks. At this point she will still occasionally just drag herself around in a sitting position, but she doesn't need the cart. A dog would only spend a few hours a day in the cart in order to go for walks and get excercise, and she is able to do that on her own. As part of her rehab excercise we do use a "bottom ups" sling to help her with her balance while practicing right hands turns, etc. If a new owner had more than a few steps she would need a little assistance with the sling, at least for the short term.
She may always have a little trouble with the right leg due to her spinal injury, or it may become completely normal with time, it is too soon to predict. She is still getting steadily better every week....

Dr. Karen, does Ellie still need to spend time in her cart? I can't believe how far she's come, play bows and play chasing...I'm telling everyone I know about her, in case someone wants a great dog.

Hi,
Latest update on our Ellie girl.......

She had a great week at rehab, and on Friday made a visit to Thorne's house. Thorne works with Shelter Showcase and is willing to give Ellie some weekend sleepover time, so we can work on her house manners and socialization. Thorne has two dogs, a large dog (who really wasn't so sure about Ellie and was staying away) and a small terrier mix. Ellie got along well with both of them, and after an hour of exploring the house and yard and ignoring them, she finally decided to play with the little terrier who had been desperately trying to entice her for the whole hour. Ellie did some great play bows and tried to chase the little one, making some great sharp turns to the left and right, though she doesn't have the balance yet to keep that up for long. Thorne's cats wondered by, and Ellie perked up for a moment, then just walked away when they ran off. She snored the whole way back to the kennel, having had a very long and busy day.!
She seems like she would do well in a house with both dogs and cats, and she has now met 3 different little dogs and seems to think they are just great. (she was a momma at least several times from her appearance and seems to have a soft spot for little dogs).
Ellie received a second sleepover invitation from a Veterinarian who works for Hartz, Jill. Jill helped us out with the Katrina dogs, and has also indicated that Ellie could do some weekend sleepovers! She is getting quite the busy social schedule.

Please put the word out that this little girl really wants a forever home.

Astonishing! it really is miraculous. Compare the first videos to these...you'd never think it'd be possible. I can't say enough good things about Ellie's team...I have everyone at work look at these videos...Huge cheers for Canine Aquatics, Dr. Karen, Shelter Showcase and the kennel and 11th Hour, for working a miracle here in northern NJ, and tons of puppy kisses to Ellie! I'm going to donate again once the holidays are paid for....
