The lives of many animals currently living at the shelter are at risk of euthanasia.
As of today, a budget cut will go into effect in that will close down the Lane County Animal Services located in Eugene, Oregon. This is very bad news for the strays of Lane County. (
Budget Cuts)
Without the funding necessary to keep the Lane County Animals Services going, non-profit groups will be the only option available in the future to stray and/or lost animals who otherwise will be euthanized due to a lack of space. Unfortunately most of the non-profits are already working at full capacity and won't be able to take in every animal that is found.
Lane County Animal Services are working hard to come up with a solution to the budget crisis, but with two thirds of their funding gone there isn't much they can do. Right now they are trying to adopt out as many animals as possible to prevent having to euthanize any that are currently in their care.
An Adopt-A-Thon is scheduled for this Sunday, June 1st from 11a.m. - 4p.m. at the Lane County Fairgrounds. Lane County Animal Services, as well as many non-profit rescue groups, will be at the Adopt-A-Thon with their adoptable animals. More information can be found here
Adopt-A-Thon.
Even if you aren't able to take home a new companion permanently, please consider fostering an animal until it can be placed in a forever home. Or stop by and see if there are any other ways to help the animals of Lane County and the rescue groups that are now their only hope.
