Progress Being Made With Disposition of Oregon Blacktail Deer, Snowball

September 14, 2007 : 3:52 PM
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is responding to public pressure and have agreed to not euthanize the two deer that were seized from the Molalla family.

The older female deer, Snowball, was found on the side of the road with deformed feet and the Molalla family took her home and cared for her for many years.

Someone turned them in to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the 2 pet deer were seized.

It is sad when the kindness of a human toward a wild animal causes the human and the human helpers to face recrimination.

How said...I realize that many vets do not have the "license" to treat wild animals--yet when your client comes to you with an injured being that you are not supposed to be treating because your license doesn't give you the leeway to do so...what is up with that????

I have a friend/coboard member of a non-profit who is a vet. She said someone brought her a rock chuck that someone had hit on the road. The rockchuck needed to be euthanized, and she said all she could think of was that she would lose her license to practice if it was found out that she was treating a "wild" animal...and one who was going to die from car injuries anyway....

Sometimes genuine empathy and caring for the furred/winged/scaled ones in an emergency needs to be overlooked by "law." I would hope that if I hurt something wild and took it to my vet, that they would not stand on "I can't treat that because it is wild," stance.

It is like a person doctor saying, "I can't treat you because I am not a specialist in the area...."

Sometimes we need help. Any help will do. This goes for all creation. Shame on those who would prosecute or prevent help for an animal (or person) in need when the dots aren't dotted or the t's crossed.

When we came across an accident, my husband and I did everything in our power to make sure that the victims were safe from others hitting them. We contacted local rural folks and had them call 911, call ambulances, fire trucks, etc. We did everything we could to be sure that aid came to the two victims. We did not touch them for fear of being sued...how terrible is that? But luckily those two motorcycle riders crashed into a tree in front of a surgeons acreage--and he just happened to be home (which his wife told us, he never is)....he took over the medical part--and my husband and I made sure that cars slowed down on either side of the accident until the police and the fire department and the ambulances did their thing.

We are placed in positions of stewardship and caring for our brothers and sisters. We are our "brothers' (and sisters') keepers." I think of the Neil Diamond song, "He ain't heavy, he's my brother."

Would that we all watched out for those around us--

Shame on anyone ho would try to prosecute the vet who tried to help or the people who stepped in---

I am sure that Snowball would be horrified if she knew, as well she should...

I am so glad they are not going to kill these beautiful deer. I hope there will be a way for them to be returned to this wonderful family who spent thousands of dollars helping this deer.
I also heard the Vet might be in trouble for treating snowball.
Thanks for keeping us informed.
