Breeders Push for Obama to get a Purebred

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has always been active in politics, (mostly to lobby heavily against any spay/neuter, breed-specific, or puppy mill legislation) and now they’re out in full force for the Presidential election.

The AKC was quick to note that the McCain family already has a Labrador Retriever, a Yorkshire Terrier and a variety of other pets, but the Obama family is sorely lacking in canine companionship.

It’s been reported that Obama has promised his two daughters that once the election is over, the family can get a dog. The AKC quickly jumped on the news and published a news story and launched a polling site for people to vote on what type of purebred dog the Obama family should get if Barack Obama wins the presidential election (currently, the Poodle and Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier are tied for the lead).

Apparently, the AKC believes that only purebred dogs are worthy of the White House!

There’s nothing wrong with having a purebred dog, but there is one very important message left out. Nowhere in the article or polling site does the AKC mention adoption!

They’ve left out the millions of wonderful mixed breed and rescued purebred dogs and their families who know better. And so Best Friends has launched a website for YOUR voice to be heard.

Go to www.obamafamilydog.com to see why we believe adopting a dog (purebred or mixed) is the winning choice. If you agree, add your name (or your dog’s name) to the petition!

Wow, AKC sure sounds stuck up if you ask me. I like to know what their reasons are that the dog needs to be a purebreed? Have they forgotten that their are millions of dogs that are perfectly fine for the Obama's to adopt.

This isn't about high class dogs here. I am sorry, not that I don't like Poodle's but, I just don't see this type of dog for his girls. And, another thing, this shouldn't be about what AKC wants. It is about what the girls want.

Maybe someone can bring this petition to Oprah's attention...wouldn't it be great if she did a piece on her show about the Obama family's pet adoption process? Cute kids, adorable dog saved from a shelter....what a nice story!

Hey - Why don't we get Oprah to counsel Obama on this? She's one of his biggest and most influential supporters, AND she has vowed to only adopt animals.

Just a thought.

If I typed here what I really think about the AKC, I'd probably be banned from the network. Geez Louise, people. And the worst part is this: John S. Public and Jane Q. Public, who don't know the real story about the AKC, probably believe the organization is all about good and all about what is best for animals. Yeah, right. When we finally get mills to go bye-bye, the AKC needs to follow suit. They should be ashamed.

No. No more so than an upper class individual is more important than a middle class individual.

We are all equal, regardless of class, species, race, religion, etc

The AKC does not care about dogs...they care about PROFITING from their use of dogs....huge difference there.

If they cared about dogs, they wouldnt support irresponsible breeders who mistreat dogs.

"Profits Before Pups" should be the AKC's slogan.

Just my opinion, of course.

Oh, and if all that doesn't work, send them to this blog entry about Missy the Pit, rescued by network members Cathy and Kim in Wyoming and the best friend a little girl could have. Warning: the photos may induce cuteness overload. ; )

This is GREAT! I vote for Georgia of the Vicktory Dogs. If the Obamas believe all the stuff about dangerous pit bulls, show 'em that story about her trip to Hollywood, have them watch the NatGeo special and, if all else fails, remind them that she has no teeth . . . and why.
