P. S. To comment about El Monte - the woman calling was Hispanic which is a good portion of the city's population in our area - and there's also a fair number of Chinese, Vietnamese residents.

When we first moved our rescue in El Monte, someone phoned one day and asked if we adopted dogs to people who lived in El Monte. I was a little dumbfounded because we're located in El Monte, and would adopt dogs to any qualified homes wherever located.....which is what I replied. The caller said that she had just spoken with a neighboring rescue group and told flat out that they didn't adopt to residents of El Monte.

We invited this woman and her family to come visit our sanctuary and helped match them up with a pal......this was l0 years ago and now 5-6 dogs ago. They started out adopting very senior beagles, then the oldest dachshunds we had; and brought their extended family, friends, co-workers, teachers and other families from the children's school. Then the school sponsored and fostered dogs and sent volunteers to help us on all sorts of projects. When we had two little puppies whose mother died the day after they were born, the mothers at the school shared the responsibility of co-parenting these babies - an almost impossible job - and found them loving homes.

Girl Scout troops came out over and over from this initial contact. These folks created the most unique ways to participate and give to our group. For years one mother requested that her Mother's Day gift be that her family come and volunteer the day with our dogs.

From that one initial call, many dogs have been helped in so many ways.....hundreds that I can count, and hopefully many more than I don't even know about......
