Liberty Humane Society needs volunteers and donations.

May 11, 2008 : 11:16 PM
Friday April 11th, 2008, after a long history of problems and issues resulting from mismanagement, abuse and misdealing, the NJ Hudson County SPCA was suspended from any and all operations until at least May 19th, 2008.

15 dogs, 26 cats and 1 ferret were removed from the Hudson County SPCA shelter and placed in the care of the Liberty Humane Society. Under court order, the animals were removed by members of the Jersey City Police Department, Hudson County Animal Advocates and Liberty Humane Society.

Liberty Humane Society was founded in 1999 to work with the City of Jersey City under the auspices of the Jersey City Mayor and Council to take over the operations of the Jersey Animal Shelter. Normally the LHS Shelter has around 130 cats and dogs and the latest arrivals have increased the population by 57%. LHS was awarded a $10,000 emergency fund by the ASPCA. These funds are being used to purchase an industrial washer and dryer and will be put towards other emergency related costs.

The LHS Shelter now has over 200 cats, dogs and a ferret and your help is requested. Vivian Kiggans, the LHS executive director, is asking for the communities’ assistance in this emergency. Cash donations, supplies and volunteers are needed more than ever.

How you can help:

If you would like to volunteer at the Liberty Humane Society, please visit the Volunteer page for more information. The web page has a pdf form you will need to fill out and submit for review.

If you would like to make a cash or supply donation to the Liberty Humane Society, please contact LHS at 201-547-4147 or e-mail them at lhs@libertyhumane.org with the subject heading cash/supply donation. A staff or volunteer member will get back to you to further assist you.

You may also adopt one of the cats and dogs that are at Liberty Humane right now. If you are interested in adopting an animal, please visit the shelter during adoption hours: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily and 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Prior to visiting, please check out the LHS Petfinder page to see who is up for adoption.
