In May of 2007, the city of Greensburg, Kansas was completely destroyed (95 % of the structures destroyed) by an EF-5 tornado. This left hundreds of humans and animals homeless.
The
Pratt Area Humane Society responded to the call for help and took in the animal refugees from Greensburg, KS. The shelter was in need of some serious renovations prior to the May 07 storm. Now the shelter is beyond its capacity with 200 cats and dogs from the Greensburg area that were rescued after the tornado. There is no adequate drainage and lack of means to sanitize and isolate sick animals.
A campaign and donations brought in enough money to pay for the 40 by 72 foot steel structure and it is suppose to be up by June of 2008. The interior part of the construction then begins. The 70,000 dollars that have been raised so far will go towards the structure itself. The interior will have to be done in sections as the donations and fundraising continues.
The new structure will be have 24 kennels, instead of 9, have isolation and holding locations. Also include is housing for 20 cats. The shelter takes in roughly 500 animals a year. The City pays 1,000 dollars a month to the Pratt Humane, provides electricity and trash pick up.
What you can do:Pratt Area Humane Society broke ground on March 26th in an industrial park just north of the junior college. There is enough money to get the building built but funds will be needed to get the interior completed.
This is going to take even more fundraising. Donations are needed to help get the shelter completed and operational.
