New director at Nevada Humane Society has no-kill background

January 14, 2007 : 12:00 AM
Bonney Brown has been picked as the new executive director for the Nevada Humane Society (that's a photo of her).

She comes for Best Friends, the huge no-kill shelter in Utah that recently rescued hundreds of bunnies in Reno and many pets from war-torn Lebanon. She also led a rescue effort in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

The press release sent out by the Humane Society about her hiring certainly should cheer anyone who's an animal advocate:
Ms. Brown was the Chief Operations Officer for Best Friends Animal Society, the nation's largest sanctuary for homeless, abused, and neglected animals, and a leader in the national No Kill movement.

The No Kill movement seeks to unite private shelters and animal control agencies in a partnership to end the killing of savable homeless pets through spay/neuter, adoption, foster care, working with rescue groups and the use of volunteers. ...

Recently, Ms. Brown has been assisting Philadelphia Animal Care and Control, the fifth largest animal control agency in the country, reduce the killing of homeless cats by organizing volunteers, implementing non-lethal feral cat sterilization programs, and revamping the agency's response procedures.

"I am very much looking forward to working with and getting to know the Reno community," said Ms. Brown. "The Nevada Humane Society has the opportunity to lead the No Kill effort in the area and together, with Washoe County Animal Services, make it a model for the rest of the nation."
