Animals blessed at annual ceremony
As part of its 100th anniversary celebration, St. Cecilia Cathedral held its annual animal blessing Saturday morning. About 250 people came to have their animals blessed.
Of course there were dogs and cats, but some people even brought their hamsters and owls to the blessing, which has its roots in the feast of St. Francis.
Heather Johnson of Omaha brought her two dogs to be blessed. She says she thinks they do have a spiritual side.
"I actually do. I think God created all creatures. I don't think we're the only ones that have a place to go after we die," Johnson said.
Brother William Woeger, the director of the Cathedral Arts Project, said, "I don't know if animals have souls, but they certainly are part of the gift of life that God gives us and that's enough for me. I don't need to ask anymore questions."
Saturday marked the 20th annual animal blessing at St. Cecilia. The cathedral's 100th anniversary celebration runs through Sunday and continues next weekend.
