Event Finds New Families for Lost Dogs

Event Finds New Families for Lost Dogs
by Brittany Brauer
Two dogs sit patiently beside a booth in the Wells Fargo Bank in downtown Lincoln. It's "Adopt a Shelter Dog Month" for the Capital Humane Society and time for the downtown community to meet the shelter dogs. As curious passersby stop to say hello to the dogs, friendly Capital Humane Society volunteers are ready with information. The larger one, Sloan, is a shy but sweet Border collie mix. And the little golden fellow, Calvin, is a beagle mix. As the boys lounge comfortably in the bank lobby, it’s almost hard to imagine that they were both on the street just a few months ago.

Lost and Found
Although the two dogs arrived at the shelter separately, they had one thing in common - they had both came to the Capital Humane Society as lost dogs. Calvin is the golden boy. Although he was a bit shy when he first arrived in September, he has since warmed up and loves attention. Sloan is a handsome black and white border collie. Not only is he friendly, he also is a bright dog who knows how to sit, lie down, and shake paws. He has been waiting for a home since July 11th. Though they have both come from a harsh environment, their ability to love and trust has remained intact. With an event like Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, these two are able to prove that even though their previous owners didn't know how to love them, these special dogs have had it in them the whole time.

Adopt a Dog Week
For over 17 years, the Capital Humane Society has been doing an "Adopt a Shelter Dog Month." The top priority of the event is to introduce the shelter dogs to the public. As an added benefit, the shelter takes the opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of adopting shelter dogs. This year the event was a success. Two dogs were adopted and two more were put on hold, one of which was the endearing Calvin. Beyond finding homes for the dogs, the shelter was able to share information with the downtown crowd about adopting dogs and also how to care for pets. But the story doesn't end there, just 3 days later; Calvin's new family came to the shelter to pick him up. He was on his way to his forever home.

How you can get involved
The Capital Humane Society always welcomes volunteers at the shelter.
People can also help by participating in the shelter's special events (like the upcoming Pet Pictures with Santa Event). To learn more, go the shelter's website: www.capitalhumanesociety.org
