McCook city council denies exception to breeding kennel
Dan and Lizanne Miller’s plans to run a breeding kennel have been squashed by the McCook city council. Because they are within the city limits of McCook (population around 7,500), the couple would need a special exception from the council to operate, though they already have thirty breeding dogs and fifteen puppies.
Council members stated many reasons for denying the exception, including simply not wanting McCook to be known as a place with large-scale dog breeding kennels. Part of their reasoning was that to do so would be disrespectful to their shelters who work hard to place homeless animals in the area. In addition, several of the Miller’s neighbors signed a petition against the kennel, and community members pointed out that they had already been operating without the special exception they should have gotten before starting up the kennel.
Following the meeting, McCook city manager stated that the Millers would now have to close their breeding business.
