295 cats and dogs arrive at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

September 26, 2006 : 12:00 AM
Well, this is it! The Best Friends Rescue Center located in Angel Canyon, and, the new temporary home for the animals rescued from Beruit.

Trucks filled with carriers unloaded at approximately 8:00 a.m. Within a couple of hours, the dogs and cats were all in their new temporary residences, which had been built in just four days at the side of one of the big horse pastures.

In the wee hours of the morning Best Friends staff and volunteers, along with three people from BETA, the only humane society in the whole of Lebanon, drove from Las Vegas Airport to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Southern Utah.

Once at the sanctuary, everyone worked quickly to get the dogs and cats acclimated to their new environment.

Both animals and people were in good spirits. Although weary-eyed and tired, there were wagging tails, purring voices, and happy hello howls.

They'll all be staying at the sanctuary for a minimum of two weeks, for complete health and behavior checks. And then, we'll begin sending these war-torn, but amazingly friendly, creatures to their new forever homes.

I didn't know of a better place to post this information. EVERYONE needs to go to www.cbsnews.com and vote for next week's Assignment America story. One of the choices is about these animals. The voting is all weekend. During the evening news on Monday they will announce the story chosen and then it will air next Friday. I'm sure the other 2 topics are nice, but THIS is the story that needs to be highlighted by another national newscast. Go Vote! I did. :-)

Yes, it is indeed revolutionary. This is the work of visionaries, a work of the soul. This daring, determined, thrilling, courageous journey leaves me, also, stronger, more hopeful, and convinced of its groundbreaking potential for the future. I am full of awe and profound gratitude in the presence of such work.

This is revolutionary! So many times, during past
conflicts/wars, I've called the media on live shows
and asked: What about the animals? What can we
do for them? It was as if I were calling from Pluto.
Individual voices don't make the impact...but a
united network: BEST FRIENDS has made the dif-
ference. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.

I am awestruck by this sight. The work involved in organizing this had to be exhausting -- but what a wonderful sight to see and how rewarding for everyone involved.

My thanks to everyone who helped make this happen! Hats off to you!

To those interested in adopting dogs or cats: Yes we do plan to have pictures up soon of these beautiful furry ones. I saw some of the dogs as they were being unloaded and they were happy and friendly. But I worked with the cats all day so I can tell you that these are very sweet, wonderful cats. We are all happy they have arrived safe and sound.

Will these adoptable animals have their images and profiles up on the Network? It would be nice to fill out an adoption application with a specific pet in mind. Thanks!

This story brings tears to my eyes. It is incredibly gratifying to know that there are still kind people in this world who give their all and neither ask nor expect anything in return. My husband and I had our first child a year ago, and my family constantly tells us we shouldn't have another because "this world is such a terrible place" and "this is a horrible time in history in which to raise a child." Amidst all the news of doom and gloom, this story is an amazing bright spot and an outstanding reminder that there is still kindness and caring to be found in this world. God Bless Best Friends and all those who helped make the rescue of the Beirut animals possible!

All who have posted before me have said it all so well. It can never be repeated enough, though, that in a world overwhelmed by war, poverty, ethnic and racial hatred, there REALLY IS GOOD HAPPENING TOO. Best Friends and BETA have and continue to be living proof of this, as have the Israelis and others who helped make this happen. God bless you!

Yesterday afternoon, in my conversational Spanish class, our homework had been to write a brief story on any topic. I wrote about the work of BETA and BF rescuing the animals in Lebanon and bringing them here to the US (and that they were in the air as we spoke). Even with all the mistakes in my Spanish, the entire class and the teacher paid rapt attention and asked so many questions afterwards about the project, about BETA, and about Best Friends and their wonderful work for all animals, that it was quite awhile before we got to any corrections in my grammar!
I'm thrilled at the success of this great effort! I was stuck like glue to the BF website all day and last night, and followed your progress home. Welcome to Utah, everyone, especially all the weary furry souls looking for a wonderful new start! God's blessings on all of you for a job well done!
