FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Allen Park, MI, Feb. 5—Shelter to Home, Inc. animal rescue received a $5,000 award from Maddie’s Fund Saturday.
Maddie’s Fund, a grant generated to help hard to place dogs and cats, launched a competition through Petfinder.com in August 2007. Over $300,000 was awarded amongst over 100 non-profit animal rescues throughout the country, rewarding them for successful marketing campaigns for adopting hard to place animals. Awards ranged from $500 to $25,000.
Shelter to Home’s marketing strategy consisted of a YouTube video created by volunteers in the rescue group.
Maddie’s Fund defines a hard to place animal as “a cat or dog that is elderly, blind, deaf, disfigured, shy, unattractive, or requires in-home follow up medical or behavioral care.”
Kalin Albertsen, Director of Shelter to Home, said, “An example of an animal that qualified as hard to place was a dog named Alex that we took into our rescue program in October. Alex had a shattered and infected leg and pelvis and lay for five days at a local shelter without any medical attention. With the help of donations from the public, we fixed his leg and put him through rehabilitation therapy. Alex is now living a wonderful and spoiled life with his new owner in Allen Park."
Shelter to Home rescued 96 hard to place animals in 2007.
"Brown tabby and black cats are of the most difficult ones for us to find homes. Temperament aside, they are overlooked for cats with more colorful or unique patterns. No cat should be left in a shelter to die simply because it looks "average",” said Albertsen.

Donations are needed for Shelter to Home to continue to rescue animals that are hard to place. A donation can be made via Shelter to Home’s website or may be mailed to:

Shelter to Home, Inc., a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 2007, does not have a physical shelter and places all rescued animals into foster care before they are adopted. Shelter to Home consists entirely of unpaid volunteers with a mission of rescuing animals from euthanasia at pounds in the Metro-Detroit area. Because of the extremely high euthanasia rates at these pounds, Shelter to Home does not accept owner surrendered animals.
