Hmm, how to describe myself? Let's see: I rescue animals all over the world - my most recent experiences involved fostering a baby macaque monkey in Indonesia, and helping rehabilitate an abandoned 8-month old elephant in Thailand. I'm also a writer and have features and columns in travel, sports, lifestyle and animal welfare publications. But what I'm most known for is helping cats.
I helped develop (and still run) a truly wonderful program called Project Bay Cat, which has proven to people around the world that spaying/neutering community cats (aka Trap-Neuter-Return) and humanely managing them is an effective and compassionate way to help them, and that it’s possible for feral cats and wildlife to coexist. When I began helping feral, stray, abandoned and free-roaming cats in 2004, I quickly learned that these cats were invisible to most people. In addition to helping them, I knew my mission would have to include changing peoples’ perception about them, and inspire them to become part of the solution (which is why I write articles about feral cats for various magazines, speak at conferences and to rescue groups, and help individuals in various locales.) Many people tried to discourage me, saying “no one cares about those cats, and you’re not going to get them to care, it’s impossible.” But I care. Now thousands around the world are helping community cats all because Project Bay Cat has helped show them what’s possible. It's up to *all of us* to show the world that humanely helping animals is the right thing to do.
