June 20, 2008 : 9:36 AM
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward for information that leads to a conviction in the shooting death of a dog that an Emmitsburg couple rescued from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, according to a press release from the Washington, D.C.-based animal protection organization.
The reward of up to $2,500 joins a $500 reward from the Frederick County Humane Society, a $100 reward from Randy Smith of Frederick, and rewards from two anonymous donors of $600 and $300, according to Harold Domer, director of Frederick County Animal Control.
‘‘Getting the serious attention of law enforcement, prosecutors and the community in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the community,” according to the press release from the national group. ‘‘The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented.”
Pam and Eddie Moreland of the 17000 block of North Seton Avenue, owned Lulu, a Labrador-Great Dane mix. The dog was found shot to death in an Emmitsburg field May 31. The dog had been shot twice, once in the head and once in the leg.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Frederick County Animal Control at 301-600-1544.
