Once a year the students at University of Redlands, a small liberal arts college with around 1,800 students, have a chance to take a four-week, off-campus class at Best Friends. The goal? Taking animals seriously! The 6th annual class just finished. While at Best Friends, the students were kept busy with volunteering in the animal areas and attending a variety of lectures from instructor Kathie Jenni and Best Friends’ staff that dealt with issues all across the board about animal ethics. Kathie said she wants to help the students reflect on their everyday lives with regard to their decisions that involve animals.

That’s what Sonya Wilson did, and now she has completed six intensive weeks of learning about what it means to work in animal welfare.

Amanda Cavazos plans to get a master’s degree in animals and public policy, but first she came to Best Friends to get a little taste of "the real world" of animal welfare. What has surprised her the most since becoming an intern here? "How much more there is to this than just taking care of animals."
