"Hope"

“Hope"

“Hope” is the name we gave this dog because he showed us that in the aftermath of nature’s hard blow that destroyed his home and claimed the lives of his family, he stood guard at the door, surrounded by rubble. This is the story of a dog that remained loyal to his masters as hundreds of people fled the area and abandoned him.

When we rescued the dog, we realized that he had been standing guard and had not even taken the liberty to step outside the house. It appears that some families in the house had died in the Church of Pisco.

With our limited resources and will to save whatever animals we could, block by block in the city of Pisco, we were very sad to find so many animals that had fallen victims to the earthquake. It broke our heart to not be able to even cover the hundreds of animals in the rubble.

80% of this city is destroyed; it looks like someone bombed the city. But it lifted our hearts when we found this one dog on August 24th, at 11 AM, among the rubble. We prayed, and when it became clear that this one dog did not want to budge, we had to lift him carefully, massage him and give him salt water so he could rehydrate. He eventually started eating and we took him to a house that offered him refuge. He is recuperating, and this has given us hope for all affected animals to find a new home and a new life where they can show their love to humanity.

We urgently need help; the disaster’s magnitude was so severe that the widespread destruction is difficult to keep pace with, despite how many groups have dedicated their time to saving animals’ lives. Three weeks have gone by, and we need long-term help. Hope needs your help; he represents the thousands of animals hit hard by nature.

We hope to get some financial help to continue our rescue efforts; we have no resources, and our needs are urgent. We have little to offer our animals in the scope of this disaster.

It is impossible for most of us here in the States to enter into these experiences of real disaster, wherever they are in the world. And it requires the ability to become truly selfless, this giving of long-term help on the ground under extreme and demanding conditions. Otherwise, unable to let go of one's own ego, one is hooked by the suffering all around and becomes fairly useless to the very animals one is trying to save.

I bow in awe before those people--Rich Crook and his tribe all over the world--who are able to enter into that condition of selflessness that enables a willing sharing of suffering and leads to mighty acts of salvation and grace.
