Peru: "The magnitude of the disaster is incalculable!"

August 30, 2007 : 4:40 PM
In the aftermath of the 8.0 earthquake

By Jorge Aranibar Dueñas, Jorge Layne Cahuantico, and Melissa Paredes Villanueva, Asociacion Defensora de la Fauna y Flora, Lima, Peru

Edited for clarity

These are very difficult moments for the animals after the natural disaster.

After the earthquake, thousands of animals have been left abandoned -- dogs, cats, and donkeys. Many people have left the area, leaving their animals behind.

The animals are starving, have wounds and trauma, and many have died.

We urgently need help with the following:

Dog and cat food - first aid trauma medicine

Transportation for supplies and relief workers

Resources to enable us to set up a Temporary Shelter for the animal victims

Logistical support for the volunteers -- field supplies and food

Thank you for any help that you could offer us. We will be sending photos of the tragedy that has affected the animals. The magnitude of the disaster is incalculable.

Our regular program of help for the Donkeys and Horses in Huancavelica has been affected just as the city of Ica has.

We will look forward to hearing from you, for any contacts that you could offer to us and for support with transportation to help and rescue the animals.

The address given below is for the purpose of centralizing supplies that can then be sent on to southern Peru by our volunteers.

We are in need of vehicles, either lent or donated, because we anticipate a long-term need to provide help for the animals. We have volunteer drivers and veterinarians who need transportation and emergency equipment for treating animals.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

I am the Director of Amazon Cares, and we currently have a team of Vets at work in the disaster areas of Peru. We closed our Vet clinic in Iquitos, Peru temporarily to bring 2 Vets and 2 Vet Techs plus myself to these areas of Peru. We also arranged for a 20 member team from the Canadian Animal Assistance Team to come help for 2 weeks! Working with the Ministry of Health, and an emergency plan is just now falling into place (we have been working under extreme chaos for 5 days, but yesterday finally had some semblance of organization, despite less than favorale working conditions). We are also working on short and long term plans. Other organizations involved are Animal Rescue New Orleans and ASSPCA, the Animal Protection Organization located in Lima, Peru. Yesterday, Sept. 1, we worked in a tent city and were joined by 4 Veterinarians from Ica as well as a cadre of Vet students. Situation is dire. Donations can easily be made through our website as we are a registered US charity. www.amazoncares.org. All funds go directly to this effort. Sincerely, Molly Mednikow
