April Spotlight: Porter County Animal Shelter

April 8, 2008 : 8:04 AM
The Porter County Animal Shelter is an animal control facility in northwest Indiana. The mission of the PCAS is to protect public safety and animal welfare by enforcing pertinent laws, providing a safe haven for lost, abandoned, and unwanted pets, and maximize animal adoption and to educate the public on animal health and responsible ownership. Each year the shelter takes in nearly 3,000 animals from Porter County municipalities.

The staff and board of the Porter County Animal Shelter are dedicated to saving as many animals as possible each year. This occurs through adoptions, animal foster care programs, and by working with rescue organizations. One of the animals saved recently Sadie a 6 year old Basset. Sadie is with her forever family. She was brought to the shelter as a stray. Because of her age she was placed on hold for the mandatory 3 days and then she would be placed on the euthanasia list. Tom and Lyn Moore didn’t want to see her put down just because she was old and showed signs of hip problems. Sadie is happy and healthy with her new family including their 2 year old Border Collie Payton.

To spread its mission of educating the public on responsible ownership the Porter County Animal Shelter will be holding its 12th Annual Be Kind to Animals Open House and Fundraiser on April 26. Held at the Porter County Expo Center from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. this free event is a perfect event to attend with your family. Browse displays from local pet related businesses, watch police dog demonstrations, learn from local veterinarians, or get a great prize or basket in the silent auction or 50/50 raffle.

Most importantly, the Open House is an excellent opportunity to mingle with some adoptable animals. Your pets are welcome as well and there will be micro chipping and registration is available for a $20 fee and also a professional photographer on site to photograph your furry friend. Supporting the Porter County Animal Shelter through this event will help save animals in your community.

How else can you help?

Encourage your friends and family in northwest Indiana to visit the Porter County Animal Shelter when thinking about adding a new pet to their family. Check out pictures of animals currently available for adoption on the “Animals Needing Homes” forum of the Indiana Community.

Not looking to add to your family right now, support the shelter with a donation.
