Post-Oprah: Now What Can You Do?

April 7, 2008 : 10:04 AM
As a tribute to her late Cocker Spaniel Sophie, Oprah dedicated an entire show to dogs, overpopulation, and the issue of puppy mills. It is nearly impossible to not acknowledge the huge impact that Oprah can have, whether it is bringing attention to an important cause or promoting a book, she reaches millions.

Proclaiming she will never again purchase a dog will hopefully spark millions of others to make the same proclamation and consequently, save millions of animals as well. The episode was difficult to watch and showed atrocities in puppy mills and the sad reality of relinquished animals in shelters, but it did have a silver lining. Not only were viewers exposed to important issues, they were also able to see the happy, healthy dogs rescued from mills and adopted from shelters.

Now that the Oprah episode is over, what can you do?

The Animal Law Coalition has published an interesting story on how to continue the fight against puppy mills. Check out this wonderful article for ideas on how you can help the millions of homeless pets in our country and all of the dogs suffering in mills.
