West Bengal: State Governor admires animal welfare work of ASHARI

May 10, 2007 : 12:00 AM
The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi stated that animals should be treated with “love and humanity” during his visit to animal-care facility in Kolkata.

Animal advocate everywhere are encouraged by support for their work, and this was the case earlier this month when the Governor of West Bengal, Gopalkrishna Gandhi (the youngest grandson of Mahatma Gandhi) visited the animal-care facility ASHARI in Kolkata.

Representatives of ASHARI were honored by the Gandhis’ visit and reported that the couple repeatedly stated that “they couldn't believe that such facilities for animals existed in Kolkata.”

Shri Gandhi and his wife, Smt. Tara Gandhi, toured the facility and inaugurated the Cattle Care area by unveiling a plaque in honor of the Bombay Gow-Rakhsak Trust, which funded an ultrasound machine and a hydraulic-power operation table for cattle.

ASHARI, located on 4.4 acres of land on the outskirts of the city, includes a small and large animal hospital, an animal adoption center, and an education center. It was established in 2001 by tireless animal crusader Debasis Chakrabarti, under the auspices of Compassionate Crusaders Trust and People for Animals, Calcutta.
