Celebration at Celebration Station

January 13, 2006 : 12:00 AM
It was party time Thursday night at Celebration Station.

On their last night in a five-day volunteer stint for Tasha Corrigan and Fiona Archer of Toronto, Canada, they decided to say goodbye by throwing a party for their fellow volunteers.

“It had to be done,” Fiona said. “It was good to see people take time to visit.”

Fiona and Tasha brought cheese, crackers, dip and grapes to celebrate their time helping the animals. Diane Smith from Texas brought a bouquet of flowers for the mess table. Then a handful of people played a form of “Fear Factor” to see who could eat the most fruit and vegetables.

“We did it to say thank you to the volunteers and to keep people going,” Tasha said. “It was nice to talk to people you see but don’t necessarily speak with on a day-to-day basis because everyone’s so busy.”

But one of the highlights for everyone was watching Red, a red-nose pit bull who has no use of his back legs, scoot around on the floor and play with people. It was the first time since getting out of the hospital he was allowed out of his playpen.

Whitney Jones, who oversees the dog intake area, said watching Red was the best thing. “He looked so lonely in the corner [in his play pen],” she said, “so I let him out to see what he would do. He started playing with the volunteers.”

P.S. Red needs a good home with someone who can help rehabilitate him. He's going to be fitted with a wheelchair. He gets along well with other dogs (we don't know about cats yet) and loves every person he meets.

My family and I were at Celebration Station this past Sunday to adopt our new family member - previously called Hope by her rescuer but renamed Bella - and I met Red. OMG - what a SWEETHEART this guy is!!!! If we had not already made plans and had not driven the 6.5 hours to CS specifically for Bella, it would have been Red in the back seat of our car on the plush mink blankie driving back to Huntsville! He is such a darling and I just stood there looking at him for a good 10 minutes. My daughter was awestruck, as well. Whoever gets this fella is one lucky, lucky soul. Robin Rincon, Madison, AL

In response to BetsyW's comment above - Eddie's Wheels are the best! There are a couple of dog-cart manufacturers in the country who do a good job, but these guys are awesome. I'm lucky enough to live only 40 minutes from them. When my dog needed a cart, I was able to drive right over. They both really care about what they do (no surprise). He's a retired mechanical engineer, and you won't believe how light and maneuverable these all-terrain carts are. What you don't get to see if you don't live where I do is their adorable poster child daschund. Out of her cart, she scoots around on her butt to greet everybody. In the cart - fuggedaboudit! Up and down stairs faster than a speeding bullet. Good luck to this guy!

Red looks a lot like our dog Dixon a red-brindle from the Lamar-Dixon facility that we just foster failed with (who could say goodbye to a face like that). Dixon has similar white markings (although more on the face), the slightly wrinkly skin, and jowls. He also had some skin issues. His temperment sounds the same, too. We're praying that Red, Dixon's long last relative or kindred spirit ;), will find a great home, too. Check out Dixon's pictures from Lousiana at http://dogster.com/pet_page.php?j=t&i=211269

I'll be arriving at Celebration Station on Tuesday evening, Jan. 17, and staying until Feb. 1. I can't wait! Twyla, Celestinekitty, abiker2, I will look for you.

I hope I get to meet Red, but I hope even more that he finds a loving home.

I spent a week in Tylertown and know that you are all doing great work, you are all great. I am a physical therapist specializing in animal rehabilitation, PLEASE let me know if I can offer any suggestions as to Red's rehabilitative care. Also, if you have not yet ordered a cart for him, we use Eddie's Wheels for Pets , www.eddieswheels.com for our clients. They make excellent carts, and I believe have a rescue discount.

I was a rescuer at CS. Everyone there is doing a fantastic job. I wish I could of stayed longer.
I had my eye on a black lab/mix that I may want to foster, if his owners do not show up. He is a great dog, very friendly, and has good manners. I cannot stop thinking about him. So if anyone there knows of his fate, please let me know.
