Katrina reunion at book-signing event

June 5, 2008 : 4:11 AM
Come one, come all!

A book launch event is being held at the Best Friends sanctuary to kick off the national release of Pawprints of Katrina: Pets Saved and Lessons Learned. It also marks the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Here are the details:
WHEN: Saturday, July 26, 2008
TIME: 1:45 p.m. - 5 p.m.
WHERE: Best Friends Animal Sanctuary's Welcome Center (5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741, a 3-1/2-hour drive from Las Vegas). Refreshments will be served.

Animal activist Ali MacGraw, who wrote the book's foreword, will be at the event signing books with author and Best Friends staff writer Cathy Scott and photograher Clay Myers. Also there signing will be police K-9 handler Cliff Deutsch, who is featured on the book's cover. The book includes more than 70 photos.

Here's what the publisher says about it:

"Pawprints of Katrina includes nearly 200 heroic rescues, heartwarming reunions, and stories of selfless efforts of strangers brought together by a disaster to save animals at the Best Friends Animal Society triage center because their owners were unable to. The stories and photos included in this book will bring the experience of pet victims to life for the reader, from the first moments when the animals are rescued, to when they’re examined, treated, and cared for by volunteers, until the day they are reunited with their families or placed in new homes. The reader will also meet the volunteers who made the rescue efforts possible."

To watch video about book, go to: http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-320830.html

On display at the Welcome Center patio deck during the event will be Ark, a full-sized replica of a flat-bottomed boat used to save animals from floodwaters. It was created by Cyrus Mejia, in-house artist and a co-founder of Best Friends. The 4-by-10-foot boat is covered in a unique collage of animal admissions forms (with rescued pets' pictures), photos from volunteers, satellite images of Katrina, maps of New Orleans and strips from pet product bags used during the rescue effort.

Volunteers from Katrina will be at the event -- and we welcome even more! -- and many Best Friends staffers who worked in one capacity or another after the disaster will be there too.

For visitor information, go to: http://www.bestfriends.org/atthesanctuary/angelcanyon/visitorfaq.cfm.

A new Holiday Inn Express has opened in Kanab (435-644-3100), so if the sanctuary cabins and cottages or other hotels are full, it might have openings. There are plenty of places to stay. Summer is a busy time in the area, because of nearby Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon, so you'll want to book your reservations now.

If you'd like to take a free tour of the sanctuary, you'll need to book a reservation by calling 435-644-2001, ext. 4537. Or, for more info, go to: http://www.bestfriends.org/atthesanctuary/angelcanyon/visitorfaq.cfm

The event is going to be fun and a great time to share experiences. Any questions, e-mail Cathy Scott at cathys@bestfriends.org. To RSVP, contact Lisa Dulyea at lisad@bestfriends.org

Thanks so much, everyone! What a celebrated day it was! And what a wonderful spirit Ali MacGraw added to the events. She's a true animal lover, embracing each one she met. The day could not have been more perfect.
(bipedal: Kisses right back at Serenity!!! Wish you both could have been there.)

AWESOME EVENT!!! A long line began forming for the book signing and continued well into the third hour. July 26th turned into a giant reunion of animal and human. That evening Best Friends hosted a get together at Angel's Landing and as always, it was INCREDIBLE!!! A huge thank you to everyone who made this day possible - Barb

Can hardly wait for this event. I was lucky enough to see Cyrus' boat once, and it is a bone-tingling experience. Cathy Scott is one talented, dedicated animal-loving gal.

Does anyone know how many people are planning to attend? I'm hoping for a big reunion myself. I was in Tylertown for nine months and want to see some of those folks again.

How can we buy the book if we can't make it to the book signing?
