Experienced Trainers Needed. Can We Help You Help Them?

February 22, 2006 : 12:00 AM
UPDATE as of June 26, 2006: Our Training Partner dogs are no longer located at Tylertown. The majority of the dogs are now at our Sanctuary in Kanab. If you are interested in participating in the program or would like to learn more about it, please go to http://network.bestfriends.org/Campaigns/TrainerTab.aspx?g=e0fff6b53f5f41bdac7d0d13572bd724.

***************************************************************

Best Friends is looking for experienced dog trainers who are prepared to work with us in addressing the needs of Katrina animals with serious behavioral challenges.

We're now in the closing stages of the Best Friends rescue operation in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast.

SO FAR: About 4,000 rescued, hundreds reunited with their families, most of the rest in foster/adoption homes or in the care of humane groups around the country. This past weekend, we held a Best Friends Super Adoption in New Orleans, including homeless pets from humane groups and animal control shelters throughout the region. Over 100 dogs and cats were adopted into good homes.

STILL TO GO: There remain about 60 dogs who need special care. And we're turning to you - the nation's top trainers and rescue groups - for help.

These dogs were rescued from a traumatic situation and are now living in a high volume facility - they need a serious rehabilitative program to turn them around. We are looking for trainers who have the expertise to handle human and dog aggressive dogs.

So we're asking any and all of you who have the appropriate expertise to help these dogs to join with us in saving them, working with them, and preparing them for good permanent homes.

We know that caring for them and giving them the training they need will take time and expense, so here's our proposal:

THE PLAN

1. Come down to the Best Friends rescue center at Tylertown, outside of New Orleans. Best Friends will pay for your travel and accommodation.

2. We'll introduce you to the dogs, help you select one or more whom you feel you can work with, and send them back with you. For groups taking five or more dogs, we'll provide the additional transport.

3. Once they're in your care, we'll provide $1,000 per dog upfront to cover any medical costs or other special care needs. After that, we'll cover any continuing medical costs up until the time of their adoption.

4. We'll also showcase the great work you're doing - on the Best Friends website, by getting word out across the Internet and through local or national media wherever possible and appropriate. We want the world to know about the work you're doing for these much maligned dogs.

We know that with good, patient care, these dogs can be saved. Many can be placed in good homes. And the idea of them being destroyed is just unimaginable - not after all they've been through and after all the work that heroic volunteers have put into rescuing and caring for them. So, if you are an experienced dog handler who knows that firm direction, love and kindness can turn a dog around, please go to the Adoptions Tab to help.

THE WASHINGTON PITS: One more thing. A couple of months ago, Best Friends was involved in another rescue situation when we were approached by the sheriff of Washington County, Utah, who had taken in 51 pit bulls and was looking for an alternative to destroying them. We couldn't add these to the growing numbers here at the sanctuary and at our Gulf Coast rescue centers, but we were, and still are, able to help in other ways. Most of these dogs have already been placed into rescue or permanent homes, but 13 are still being boarded in Las Vegas and are at risk.

We are making the same offer for these remaining 13 dogs in need. For any qualified trainer or other expert or rescue group who can take in any of these dogs and give them the care they need, we'll provide the same transport and funding for medical care, and we'll work with you to showcase the great work you're doing.

AND SPEAKING OF SHOWCASING . . .

There is, of course, the much bigger issue of pit bulls nationwide. More and more, these basically good-natured dogs are being subjected to breed discrimination that does nothing to get at the underlying problems of animal abuse and neglect.

These dogs are not the aggressors; they are the victims. And if, between us all, we show what can be done for a much-publicized collection of them, we'll be playing a critical role in turning things around for these innocent creatures.

Please go to to the Adoptions Tab to help.

An update on the Washington County pits: The remaining 13 "Wigglebutts" left Las Vegas and came to our Sanctuary on May 25. I have been visiting them a few times a week, and they are just adorable. They are so excited every time they have a visitor. Their entire bodies go into wiggle overdrive, and you can always count on a good face washing. I've also been handing out lots of belly rubs.

These guys are still looking for trainers, though...so if you're interested, be sure to contact us!

You can see more on the Washington County pits at http://network.bestfriends.org/MessageBoards/Forum.aspx?g=6bf5698619984ba49d561ce8fa7ca4e0&f=541

Also, please note that we are no longer at Tylertown. The Training Partners Program, however, lives on! For more info, go to

First - Big thanks to Best Friends for this outstanding offer. I am frequently amazed at the things your organization is able to accomplish, and this might just top them all! I am quite proud to be associated with you, if only as a volunteer!

Second - I have come across someone on an animal rescue website who is interested in your offer, but would like more info, particularly on smaller dogs.

Do the photos on your website represent the current and complete selection of the remaining Tylertown dogs? Also, is there a way for interested parties to get some info about the dogs before making the trip there?

I'm sure others would appreciate this info as well.

Thanks again for doing the fantastic work that you do!

Ditto to everything everyone has posted here. My husband & I have been to BF twice & I was so taken by the whole place that I tell everyone who will listen & who I know is an animal lover (even strangers with whom I strike up a conversation) about how wonderful it is. I feel like BF's southeastern PA ambassador, spreading the news to everyone I can. My husband & I can't wait to go again this year. I only wish we lived out there so I can volunteer all the time.
And regarding pit bulls: about a year & a half ago, my husband's niece Melissa & her husband Scott were looking to adopt a dog. Because I have always been close to Melissa since she was a little girl, and she trusts my opinion, she asked me what kind of dog they should get. They wanted a friendly dog who wasn't too big or too small, was good with kids (which they would like to have eventually) & was easy to train. I told them a pit bull would fit the bill. Scott was very happy because that is what he really wanted all along (unbeknownst to me at the time). So they adopted Cooper, a one-yr-old pit. He became their baby. Sadly, after having surgery this past November to remove a cancerous tumor on his jaw, as well as part of his jaw, he will be losing his short battle with the horrible disease very soon. The tumor grew back in his throat. Melissa, who is only 24, has made the decision to put her beloved pit to sleep. She knows she did everything she could, and she knows she & Scott gave him the best year & a half of his short life. They were meant to adopt him for a reason. To give this deserving, sweet pit a chance at a good, if not short, life filled with love & understanding. May they meet him again someday over the Rainbow Bridge.....

Are these dogs still looking for their owners? If yes will keep my eyes open for them. Cute dog is he sheperd/chow? You are so wonderful Best friends! Also wanted you to know that people in NJ and NY are always trying to do thing to help New Orleans and to this day it brings tears to our eyes what has happened. CNN and Good Morning American I believe are broadcasting in New Orleans - they need to know about what Bestfriends is doing and I will try and email some good words to them.

For many of these wonderful animals the hurricane was a blessing. The beautiful grounds of the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary have already begun to make a difference in their behavior. Although barking is plentiful, St. Francis has a certain welcoming calmness that surrounds the 50 acres. As hosts to Best Friends' Hurricane Relief, we welcome and encourage people to come and help make a big difference in a life.

Since Celebration Station will be closing on the 28th of February, there will be even more animals that need some extra time and patience. Thank you BF for making such a generous offer!

I am so proud to be working for Best Friends! I am particulary moved by our efforts to help the all too often misunderstood and mistreated Pit Bulls. I am also grateful that we have been able to continue our rescue efforts in the Gulf until each animal had a caring place to go. Thank you to all involved - volunteers and staff, you're the best!

There are moments in life that you need to decide "am I going to stand up for what is right?", or " am I going to look the other way?". I am continually moved to tears when I hear about the incredible people who choose to stand up for the animals and make difference.

My deepest, heartfelt THANK YOU to the wonderul people at BF and the AMAZING volunteers who gave and continue to give so much. You inspire me (and so many others) to be better people. And you give us hope, hope that someday we WILL see a better world where animals are not treated as "things" or "property", but as loving, caring, FEELING creatures that deserve to be treated with care and respect.

Through the sadness and the heartache you push on and do what needs to be done, and for that we applaud you. It takes great effort to give your all when your heart is aching, but you ALL do it, and you do it with grace and dignity.

So from the bottom of my heart, Thank You. I am proud to be a member of the Best Friends network and I am proud to be associated with ALL of you. You make this world a better place just by being in it.

May you have blessings and good fortune for the rest of your days.

This compelling demonstration of the sincerity , generosity, and "class" of Best Friends confirms for me my earlier impression that this is THE aninal welfare organization I wish to support. Ever since I visited the Sanctuary grounds in 2003, I have been an enthusiastic supporter.

Just reading the wonderful offer of continued help for the Katrina animals, for whom Best Friends has already done so much, gives me a bit of that same mystical feeling I had when visiting the Sanctuary.

For anyone who has not had the opportunity yet to visit Best Friends' Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, please try to get there sometime in your lifetime. This may sound like a call to go on a holy treck to Mecca or the Holy Lands, but the Sanctuary is only about peace and love, and not all the other baggage associated with the other sites. Plus, it is not dangerous!!

I can hardly wait to return there, so much so that I am trying to find an MD job in the surrounding area.
So, if any of you knows of a need for a physician in northern Arizona, southern Utah or souther Nevada, please contact me.

(Karen N.): You know what? This is the most amazing organization I have ever heard of. I worked in Tylertown over Thanksgiving and I'm so proud of having done it and being a part of something so tremendously worthwhile. It is an HONOR to be a part of Best Friends. I am stunned at this approach taken to help these remaining animals - GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!!!! It is more than I could have hoped for but ernestly wished for. Thank you SO much for not giving up. I have been dreading the time I heard that BF would be leaving the Katrina area but knew that they would still be active in the effort to help until all was taken care of.....I simply can not express my gratitude.........

Thank you Best Friends, for your unceasing generosity. For anyone who has been paying attention during this disaster, you have showed us how it can and should be done. You have shown up the dinosaurs of animal welfare. Your offer of paying lodging/etc for people willing to take difficult dogs shows that there are people all over this country who are willing to support monetarily orgs such as yours that don't kill. You have shown that all the reasons for the mini-Auschwitz type shelters in this country are really just excuses. You have shown us what we really can do if only we believe it is possible. This storm has been a showcase for pitbulls as well; I truly believe that in every tragedy there are angels above working desperately to bring a ray of light into it somehow, and I feel the ray of light in Katrina is the exposure so many pit bull type dogs have gotten through Best Friends. You've shown there are as many personality types for pit bulls as there are any other breed. I know that it is what pit bulls are capable of, in their musculature and jaw strength, that makes them dangerous if they have been pre-disposed to act our from abuse or neglect, but you've shown the goofy, spoiled, playful pits like Spiderman and Red that just want love. You've changed alot of minds about this breed, and about how disaster to domestic animals can and should be handled. I know your volunteers have suffered psychologically and I know that they will be rewarded. I truly believe a new dawn is coming in this country with regards to animal welfare and I thank you for helping pave the way.
