Dog Behavior and Handling

Sherry Woodard is Best Friends Animal Society’s resident animal behavior consultant. As an expert in animal training, behavior and care, she develops resources, provides consulting services, leads workshops and speaks nationwide to promote animal welfare.

Representatives from humane organizations and shelters across the country seek out Sherry for advice. Sherry assists individuals and shelter and rescue personnel with animal behavior, management and enrichment. She gives workshop presentations on animal care, animal behavior, training and adoptions at national conferences as well as local shelters.

Sherry has written over 50 animal care, behavior, and training documents for Best Friends Animal Society that are used across the U.S. and by groups in Canada, Romania, China, India and Tbilisi, Georgia. She has created two training CDs with video, a basic and an advanced version. Sherry has also been featured in the National Geographic Channel’s TV series called “Dogtown,” which chronicles the physical and emotional rehabilitation of dogs living at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Sherry has designed a three part series of Dog Behavior and Handling workshops for Best Friends. Students start by attending the beginning level class and, after graduation, can apply for the intermediate and then the advanced levels.

Please note that these classes are very popular and fill up fast!

I attended Sherry's Behavior and Handling workshop in Sept of last year and it was wonderful! I highly recommend this workshop to anyone who works with animals. It was very informative and the change in format allows time for even more information. I am attending the Intermediate b & h workshop in Sept and hope to get into the Advanced class in Nov. If you have any interest at all in this area - you will NOT regret taking this workshop. The combination of "classroom" time and time actually working with dogs is well-balanced, and you retain much more learning that way - hands-on. Sherry has a wealth of knowledge and is happy to share it with anyone who is interested! Best Friends in general is a wonderful place who understands that sharing their knowledge helps more animals - they don't keep their ideas and methods "secret" like many organiztions may do - they share everything with anyone who wants to know - it's a novel idea we should all strive to duplicate!

I just noticed that the 2010 dates are up but I see no mention of Sherry's new workshops. Does anyone know why or if they are coming up later. I am dying to get in so I can help my shelter animals more.

Thanks!

Hi Lori - I am here now actually and just finished the intermediate behavior and handling workshop.  For 2010, they are thinking of changing the format and perhaps having two "tracks" to fit the different needs of individuals interested in learning more about behavior / training for different reasons.  I am sure as soon as they decide how they are going to set this up for next year, they will post the workshop info.  I know right now, it is not yet finalized so just keep checking in!  It's definitely worth it!!!
