Featured Visitor: Brotherly Love
Not everyone would define brotherly love as having your brother in hysterics as he watches you fly through the air, land in the dirt, and be dragged through some bushes – all the while heroically hanging on to the leash of a dog who has seen a lizard; nor would the definition usually include having a brother take (and share!) photos of said incident.

Thankfully for Pete Lipke, his sister Cindy is a very warm hearted person, who was able to find the laughter in the situation as well (and still speaks to her brother!)

Pete & Cindy live in different suburbs of Atlanta, Cindy is a flight attendant with AirTran, and Pete is retired. Currently they share a dog, Lucky, who Pete found wandering in the woods of North Carolina when she was 4 or 5 months old. He brought her home for their mother, who, although she initially wanted a “BIG” dog, did fall in love with her. Sadly, their mother passed away a year later, so Lucky now has two homes. Pete says she has three, if you count doggy day care camp. (According to Pete, she also has a gang in his neighborhood which she calls her “Under the Drain” gang – they all have biker names and high signs.)

As with so many of the members of Best Friends, neither Pete nor Cindy can remember how they initially heard about Best Friends, but they were impressed with the work here, and with the magazine, and started to donate money. Their visit here in June was their first, but will definitely not be their last. They volunteered everywhere, from Puppy Class, Old Friends in Dog Town, Horses, Pigs, Bunnies, Feathered Friends, & special need Cats.

They’re planning a return visit this year, but I have a feeling that Cindy will be holding the camera this time!

Thanks so much for sharing your volunteer adventure. That photo of you face down in the bushes, has been repeated many times by many "taken by surprise" volunteers. Even the most docile appearing dog can turn into a bulldozer at the sight of lizard. And isn't it just like a brother to capture his sister's brush with the terraine. Did he also snap you as you cuddled kitties at Benton's? You know, one that captures your "rapture in the moment" expression?

Are you going to reveal the identity of the dog? Looks a little like Pacino.

Glad to hear you survived your visit.

Oh this is so familiar.....in May my personal dive in to the bushes after seeing a lizard cross our path was with Whitney. Later, my dive was rated a 9.5 by the French judge. The next day, Jeanne shared with me that she is unable to walk Whitney and she has to leave it to Robin, so if JEANNE can't walk her, then obviously I was braver (or dumber) than I realized.

Our dear Frankie had a bush diving experience same week trying to contain Lexi, again, who also saw a lizard. Who would have guessed we needed LIZARD CROSSING signs on the dog paths?

Oh I so remember and loved this family. Cindy was so gracious to allow us to laugh with her as Pete shared her dog walking experience. I am also from Atlanta, so I talked quite a bit with this family. Thanks for the memories!

Patty - you've got a good idea - that is indeed Pacino - the Lizard Hunter!

Okay, so in hindsight maybe I should have helped more - but I DID ask right away - Cindy - are you okay??? I asked three times. After a stunned silence, she said yes. Of course, it was rather funny. Now, what would you do??? I had to capture the moment!!! Too bad you haven't seen the rest of the pics. BTW, that is Pacino. But we also fell in love with Zara. I wish she'd get adopted but if not, I'll look forward to seeing her again, hopefully later this month.

It was actually his back I recognized. That was the view I had as he dragged.......I mean walked with me all around the horse paddocks during our sleep over. Fortunately, no one was around with a camera to capture any of my Pacino-inspired gymnastics. I'll never tell.

Pete, Pete, PETE. As the younger sister of a brother who sounds shockingly similar to you I can only say the following:

1. You had to ask 3 TIMES if she was okay? You didn't rush to her aid after no response the first time? tsk, tsk. What if she was choking on tumbleweed or worse yet lizard entrails, rendering her incapable of speech?

2. And since you asked, I would have rushed to her side and helped her up and if your camera were clicking away I would have offered to delete all embarassing photos of my sister.

So Peter that said, how lucky you are to have such a brave sister who still counts you among her loyal loving relatives. Of course she may have as many incriminating photos of you we have yet to see.

I guess all we sisters are like that. We have brothers to help make us stronger and more forgiving. Thank goodness my brother doesn't monitor the Network because I would have to deny ever typing that last sentence . :-)

Okay, this is coming back to me.... Pacino was the one in the car with Frankie and I who (in a split second) jumped from the rear seat to knock the rear view mirror out of place, turn on the windshield wipers, and adjust the turn signal because a squirrel crossed the road in front of us.

That would be the very one. Although I'm afraid poor Pacino is getting a bad rap here. He's a really cool dog and a great dog for a sleepover or walking.

And just to take some more heat off poor Pacino and Cindy, it's not just the dogs who can take you out with one lunge. A volunteer friend of mine whose identity I will protect (paying attention Pete?) was dragged under a bush by the venerable, late great Judah the cat.

The cat, the bush but the volunteer's identity has been humanely cropped

Unfortunately, the lizard was an unplanned sacrifice during this foray. Sorry Mr. Lizard.

Downed by a cat!!! Leaping Lizards - what's the world coming to??? I'll have to tell Cindy since she's flying around somewhere at the moment. But wait, hmmm.... as a matter of fact, I feel a Kodak moment coming up. What's the name of that cat again? Cindy likes walking cats....

Lucky "da Luckster" Lipke likes cats too. There's not one she wouldn't mind having for a snack. As a matter of fact, her whole gang likes cats. Cat stew, cat chow, especially cat meatloaf ... they have an entire cat menu. They even use the whiskers for toothpicks!!! And you should see the tug of war with a cat tail!!! Wooheeee...........beats cigars.....

Oh for Pete's sake! More and more like by brother every sentence. In fact when you got to the cigar part I could swear you were channeling my dad. Careful what you say about Judah. He's at the Rainbow Bridge and is probably free to chase lizards across your dreams at night if you're not careful.
