Featured Visitor: A Fork in the Road – or Would that be a Hurricane?
Countless animals have Hurricane Katrina to thank for bringing Sue Mahoney into their lives!
Sue has always been an animal lover, and has been a rescuer & foster mom for many years, as well as being a Best Friends Animal Society member! She lived happily with her husband, a retired fire-fighter, in New York on several acres of land. When Hurricane Katrina hit, she felt the need to do more, and went to New Orleans, and volunteered with Best Friends at Celebration Station, the 2nd staging area that was set up in Metairie, LA. She helped out there with the dogs and the puppies, and lost her heart to a shy yellow lab mix named Butterbean. When she returned home to New York, Butterbean joined the rest of the family there.
This proved to be a turning point in her life, and she made the decision to follow her lifelong heart's desire to have an animal rescue organization of her own. She gave up a woman-run painting and wallpapering business that she shared with a girlfriend, and talked her husband into beginning a rescue organization on their five acres of land. “Another Chance Rescue Ranch” was born. Primarily a rescue for dogs and cats, a quick peek at the animals available for adoption also shows some ducks.......
In early spring, Sue had the opportunity to fulfill another dream – to visit Best Friends! Her girlfriend Brenda was coming out and invited Sue, who jumped at the chance. She was happy to tell us that they had finally received their 501c3 non-profit status, and have recently placed their 100th animal into its new, forever home.
Primarily, what Sue was looking forward to at Best Friends was the opportunity to have a sleep-over dog - she informed us that she had been very lonely sleeping alone!
