Loving Katrina Survivors Ready to Leave Spindletop
Pictured Above: Crystal

11/16/07 UPDATE: Rojo (seen in photo below) has found a forever home with a new family. He's been with them for several days now and is doing great.

The family was given a training lesson and lots of toys and treats to take home with them. Both the family and Rojo are adjusting well to each other.

Thirty-three Katrina survivors are looking for forever homes. That’s right: Fifteen months after the storm, refugee dogs are still in need of forever homes.

(Pictured left, Rojo) The dogs have been staying in Houston, Texas, cared for by Spindletop Pit Bull Refuge, but now they’re ready to go into forever homes. Pit bulls and mixes – because so many are available for adoption in shelters -- aren’t always easy to place, as Leah Purcell well knows.

She runs Spindletop and she has exhausted all leads in getting these dogs back to their original homes (she was successful in reuniting many of them).

Best Friends is hoping to adopt out all the remaining dogs by December 1 when a lease is up at a temporary shelter outside Houston. But it can’t be done without help. So even if you’re not in a position to adopt right now, if you could spread the word and let your friends and family members know that Katrina dogs still need homes, it would be a big help.

(Pictured left, Wilma) Leah has been living temporarily at the shelter while volunteers help out at her permanent location in Houston. She and the dogs are ready to get into permanent living situations again!

Ann Allums, a Best Friends trainer, recently went on an outing to Galveston with three of the available pooches -- Crystal, Rojo and Wilma.

And Ann reports that Crystal has been getting along great with Sarge, her own Katrina dog. And Wilma also has been hanging out with Sarge and actually flirting with him.

Anyone taking home one of these dogs, after qualifying for adoption, gets a complimentary training lesson from Ann.

Ann may be reached by e-mail at ann@bestfriends.org or by calling her at 435-689-0727.

I always said I would never own a pit bull....well my husband and I came home with one from the shelter almost 3 years ago. He is by far the most loyal dog we have ever owned.

The Training Patners Program has made a huge difference at the sanctuary and I hope to see it continue.
