Finding Favorite Forums

We are receiving a lot of questions about how to find favorite forums.

The most-requested forums are on the groups that give updates on the animals at the sanctuary. You can find all the groups related to Best Friends and the sanctuary from the Network homepage. On the square that says, “Connect with others,” click on “Follow Best Friends at the Sanctuary and beyond.” That will take you to a whole page of Best Friends groups.

Here is a list of the topmost-requested groups:

Best Friends Felines: http://network.bestfriends.org/groups/bffp/default.aspx

Best Friends Lodge Dogs (including Deja and Angel Lodges, as well as Letters from Home): http://network.bestfriends.org/groups/lodgedogs/default.aspx

Best Friends Sleepovers: http://network.bestfriends.org/groups/sleepovers/default.aspx

Fairway: http://network.bestfriends.org/groups/fairway/default.aspx

Garden Dogs @ Dogtown Heights: http://network.bestfriends.org/groups/gardendogs/default.aspx

New Friends: http://network.bestfriends.org/groups/puppies/default.aspx

To learn how to find forums, add them to your Favorites and receive e-mail alerts, see "Favorite Forums" by clicking HERE.

I hope you make the new forum  much easier to find things...looks very nice...and I know much hard work..so a tip of the hat there...but it really needs to be more user friendly.

Posted 8 Jul 2009 1:33 PM by laddie

Ditto sophiasmom.  I am no computer genius but no dunce, either & I have been chasing my tail just trying to find PH&S.  Instructions are not user friendly.  Hopefully things will straighten out but I don't remember having yhis much trouble learning the old Network.  How about "Step by Step Instructions for Dummies" fot the new Network.  Geri

what is the difference between "become a fan" and "subscribe"? do you need to click both?

Posted 8 Jul 2009 2:02 PM by Marion

Geri, on the top menu click "Groups" to bring up the list of groups. Then click "See all" next to Interest Groups to bring up the list of groups in alphabetical order. Scroll down to "Prayers, Healing and Support," and click the link. Look for "Forum" in the box on the upper right side to bring up the Prayers, Healing and Support Forum, one element of the Prayers, Healing and Support Community.

Carrie, I'm not 100% sure, but I think that when you become a fan the group will be listed in your profile and if you subscribe copies of all the messages posted will be sent to you via e-mail.

Hopefully someone will correct me if I've gotten it all wrong. :-)

Overall, I like the look of the new Network...but talk about not being user friendly. I am very computer and Internet savvy. I have my own websites & blogs and am active on numerous forums, etc. If I can't find the forums I'm looking for, how on earth is anyone who is less familiar with navigating a website. Technologically this may be a dream structure for you, but it is a nightmare for people trying to use it. BF volunteers have a huge presence on FaceBook and I can tell you most of them are at a total loss. Well, I need to go TRY to find a forum for to help Yvette with a very urgent issue she's having with one of her cats...

>>>what is the difference between "become a fan" and "subscribe"? do you need to click both?<<<

You must become a fan of a group in order to post to the forums!

You can find instructions for posting to forums at:

network.bestfriends.org/.../creating-a-forum-post.aspx

Subscribing to a group means that you get an e-mail notification when new content is added.

Why did B/F change the site on forums,It was easier the way it was..Now it is complacated.I cant find anything..When I click on "what I think is a "Now" group/forum It comes up,cant be found or doesnt exsit or im denied accsess..Im confussed by it all, and why so many changes.nic

Posted 9 Jul 2009 8:22 PM by Ihave13

Another thought,The new look on this thread I dont even like it,there is no pic showing who's who's.I agree with Corinnem these changes are(summing it up) in the term a nightmare for sure..Tring to find our favorite forums is by far slim..Wondering if B/F or the creator of these changes are to weed out some people or organizations..Nic

Yikes!  Just got back after being gone a little over a week and feel like I've lost my best friends (if you'll pardon the pun!).  I'm willing to stay with it but can someone let me know if the groups I'm most interested in have to be checked separately, now?

Posted 12 Jul 2009 6:49 AM by ncstorace

I, too, feel like I've really lost a lot of friends through the new changes. Before I could easily check up on my favorite blogs (Mabel, Dundee, Jiminy) and see when there were new things to read. Now it's so buried and unwieldy I feel I don't have the time to try to figure it out. Not only is this frustrating for me, but I'm sure it's hugely detrimental to BF and what you're trying to achieve. You will lose a LOT of people with this problem so I hope the website folks there can re-think this part of the website. It's really a problem.

bum, you can find instructions on bookmarking your favorite forums and getting notifications here:

network.bestfriends.org/.../favorite-forums.aspx

Posted 12 Jul 2009 6:59 AM by Joy

ncstorace, you can find information about your favorite blogs here:

network.bestfriends.org/.../28838.aspx

Thanks for your help, Joy. What is confusing is the difference between blogs and forums. I want to get notifications when a new topic is added to a blog (not a reply to an individual blog topic). So the info you posted on bookmarking favorite FORUMS and getting notifications does not correspond to anything I'm seeing in a favorite blog.

I would like to be able to get notifications when a new posting is added to a blog (i.e. when Lisa updates something about Jiminy and Zeph), but not individual replies from others about one of her postings. And can I get notifications without having them sent to my personal e-mail?  I don't want all that stuff mixed in with my work e-mail.

thanks,

N

Posted 12 Jul 2009 8:57 AM by Joy

N, the forum thread I sent you to has instructions for adding your favorite *blogs.*

It also contains the information that subscribing to a user blog is in the works.

You cannot get notifications without them being sent to the e-mail address that you registered with. You can change your e-mail address, or you can create a folder for your notifications to go into in your e-mail program.

Posted 13 Jul 2009 3:00 PM by Desertponder

Wow, this is confusing!!!

Does BF need to constantly reinvent the wheel?? Why not use a format that people are familiar with and is easy to navigate!!??

I don't like the fact that I can't easily get back to groups that I have joined. I don't want an email notification every time there is activity on a group. There needs to be a tab for "My Favorites" or My Groups so you can easily return to them and I'm not seeing that option.:(

Posted 13 Jul 2009 4:14 PM by Marion

Desertponder, instructions on adding Forums to your Favorites are included in the file linked to this news article. Once you've added a Forum to Favorites you can always find it in your Network Profile, also called a "Dashboard" now because it contains much more than the old profiles did. You access your "conversations" (private messages between Friends) there, find links quickly to any groups where you are a Fan AND find the links to your favorite forums, blogs, threads, etc.

Posted 15 Jul 2009 9:46 AM by Desertponder

O.k., I get it now. LOL! :) Once I figured out how to get to my "dashboard" then I could see how things were set up.

Its still a bit of an adjustment.:)

OOOOH BOY - I have been AWOL for awhile and came back to this - none of my old links work!  But after exploring a bit, I have several questions:

1. In my golocal - state - Local Adoptions - how can our local shelter get our pets listed here?  We're on Petfinder, but I'd like it if we can post here as well.

2. Where is the new forum (or is there one...) that replaces the former Litterbox forum?

3. This new network, besides being confusing (ok, I don't like change) seems very slow.  Do the Powers that Be think that that will improve?

Thanks!

Posted 17 Jul 2009 10:32 AM by Joy

Cat Masher,

1. Each Go Local is managed by a volunteer from that state, and your local shelter would have to contact them to ask for their pets to be listed.

2. There is currently an issue with the old Litterbox forum and we're working on it.

3. I can guarantee that the speed will improve. This is still a work in progress!

Posted 17 Jul 2009 11:08 AM by Cat_Masher

Thank you, Joy!

When the issue with the Litterbox forum is resolved, will you post it here?  (That way, I'll know to check periodically.)  Thanks!

This new website is AWFUL.  I cannot figure out how to navigate around to find ANYTHING!!!!  I give up.  Please do something to make it easier for your memebers or you will loose us!

Posted 20 Jul 2009 6:26 PM by honormacy

When you need instructions to navagate a site, something is terribly wrong.  This is not my LIFE, it is suppose to allow my mind to wander through interesting stories with comments from likeminded people and interesting antidotes from people whom I can learn.  This is a complete nightmare for me.  I really do not have the time needed to follow a bunch of instructions or even try to figure out the process.  It took two of us, on a long distance phone call, to get here.  I am DONE and pretty irritated that I sent my membership check in before I realized this will no longer be my "relax and escape" time.  I do realize time and effort was put forth to bring this out, but it is so far from user friendly it will loose the masses.  Thumbs down, way down!

Hi, sorry to be a whiner but I have not been able to find my fave forums for weeks now. I keep coming back every couple days to see if you have made it any easier, but now  after finally going to HELP and reading these instructions and comments, I guess I will just give up. Thought I would take time to give you this feedback as I will really miss following all the puppers I've fallen in love with by reading the forum postings.

Hello to all who has posted above about their comments on this site.I also agreed with you all about how some hating it or wanting it to change back ect,As I am one of you who also posted my complaints above. But As the days went on and I just took the time to look around a bit(As Marrion told me) ,I accually got to understand how this Network is set up..I admit,it does seem it takes for ever to find anything thats because everything is now scattered around instead of in one place or on one page(Like the old community page "Forms",in the old network..For me though,It was ither move to another network or stick it out ,which I did by reading all I could in the FAQ,Networking support group, even posted them in my fav..Reading others peoples concerns, questions, complaints answered alot of mine. And that helped me navigate through to the new site..But I also admit I still dont know everything on the "how to's" and I may never..But I stuck it out when I  to thought at one time Id move to another site..Good luck, nic

Finally found this!! Very confusing site, I got a notice saying I was not part of this group-and to click on "join this group" on the sidebar.  I looked 3 times-could not find anything that said "join this group". I was so interested in the Great Kitty rescue-finally found that set of blogs-and marked it as a favorite on my homepage so I could at least find that again.  Hope some new instructions come soon, this is so frustrating.

I'm sorry for the confusion. At the present time members need to be a "Fan" of a group in order to post in the Group's Forum. To become a fan click the link "Become a Fan" on the right side of the page, right under "Get involved, Save Lives." Once you've done that you should be able to post in the Forum of that Group.

I am trying to find some discussions that were going strong a year ago. There's new information that needs to be added. The people who were involved in the issue will want to be advised.

A search on the topic leads to nowhere.  Have old forums and discussions been archived or are they gone forever?

Posted 29 Aug 2009 9:51 AM by Joy

Casey, the discussions should still be there. Can you tell me what you're looking for? If you like, you can e-mail me: joy@bestfriends.org

Posted 29 Aug 2009 8:53 PM by Ihave13

Hello brownbat, casey.I do remember those days, very active indeed.I found most of those discussions you were speaking of in the Pa Forum go local,But no one has replied to them for a long while..It starts as far back on the 10th page onward..This new B/F has wiped out alot of the places we all use to visit and moved them around. It also has gotten alot of people to go A-wall just because of it being confusing to them to use this site.nic

Posted 30 Aug 2009 1:19 AM by Joy

Casey, all the discussions are still on the Pennsylvania forum. Since they have been inactive for over a year, they are quite far back. They currently start on page 9.
