"What's it like to volunteer at DogTown!". Volunteers Paul and Lori Wilson will tell you all about it! .........
Our wonderful experience volunteering at Amra

My wife, Lori, and I had the honor to be the first volunteers assigned to Amra, a new and very special dog area at Best Friends. Amra was built for dogs that need special attention because they have trouble getting along with other dogs. Lori and I found it very rewarding to work with the Amra dogs.

We arrived at Best Friends very late on Sunday, July 20, and checked into Cottage #2 -- a wonderful place. The next morning, we were astounded to see the countryside all around the cottage -- it had been dark the night before. The spectacular scenery was a complete surprise.

We watched the "welcome" video, went on the tour, and learned quite a bit about Best Friends. Then we sat down with Kalene Craddock, the Volunteer Manager, to discuss what we could do for Best Friends in the three days of our stay. We told Kalene that we are used to troubled dogs. Kalene asked some questions about our experience and, after a very nice conversation, sent us to Dogtown, where we were assigned to Amra.

Amra has two primary caregivers: Brian and Andrea. It would be very hard to find two more friendly, compassionate, hard-working, professional people anywhere. They took an interest in Lori and me, and they gave us everything to do that we were capable of doing, and they answered our questions and listened to our ideas. They kept us working pretty hard -- we were both exhausted at the end of each day. We walked dogs, fed dogs, watered dogs, took dogs out for baths, cleaned up dog runs, distributed new toys, and picked up chewed toys. It was a pretty heavy schedule; I don't know how Brian and Andrea do it every day.

On Monday evening, we took a dog named Jackson for a sleepover. He was perfectly behaved in every way. We were extremely proud of him when we took him out for dinner (in Kanab, most restaurants let you take a dog when you eat outside). He walked perfectly on his leash. We followed the normal rule at Best Friends for sleepover dogs -- we kept Jackson at a distance from other dogs. He was an absolute delight, and we were sad to have to give him back on Tuesday morning.

On Wednesday evening, we took a dog named Julep for a sleepover. She was every bit as good as Jackson -- either one of them is perfectly adoptable by the right family -- and we were, once again, very sad to have to give her back. We learned something interesting about Julep -- she seemed to want to be friendly to other dogs. We mentioned this to the people in charge of dogs at Best Friends. They were very interested, and it turns out that they had seen similar things in Julep before. We're hoping that Julep finds a good family just as soon as possible.

We have to thank Kalene, Brian, and Andrea for working with us and for their kindness. We also have to thank John Garcia and Vicki Kilmer-Rinker, who answered way too many questions for us. Finally, in alphabetical order, we have to thank Beans, Chaquita, China, Dasani, Jackson, Jazzy, Julep, King, Lexi, Minnie, Nicole, Pandora, Pinky Bear, Romo, Scarlett, and Shocky.

We'll be back next year, and every year.

Paul Wilson

thats awesome!, i didnt know you could go and volunteer on a temporary basis like that. most people think about themselves when getting away for a few days. goes to show there is something special about animal guardian angels. i'm on my way!

i wish i could have joined you. actually, were i not disabled by m.s; i would apply to work @ Dogtown, as i have much experience & training when it comes to dogs. i'd definitely take part in a sleepover, as a volunteer, but would eventually adopt 1 of the dogs. if i had the $ & transport, i'd consider adopting now - i'm looking for a dog that i, w/the help of a pro, can train to pass the certified service dog test, but live too far from utah, (wa. state), have no way of transportation and due to my disability, my income just wouldn't cover the total cost. but that is where my heart is & my spirit, w/everyone working there & w/all volunteers, as well. thanks for a great story & good for you 2! 8-)

To rauljag: Congratulations! You'll have a wonderful time. Lori and I were delighted by the opportunities we got to jump in and help. I'm sure you'll feel the same way.

To Lin: It's great to hear about the things you want to do -- I wouldn't know how to begin training a dog to pass the certified service dog test. Good for you! Now, I volunteer at a local animal shelter, and it's amazing -- they have some of the greatest dogs anywhere. Maybe you'll find just the right dog nearby!

Great report! I just got back from Best Friends where I spent the majority of my time at Dogtown. I volunteered at Amra twice. Andrea was floating between Amra and the Fairway and I got to work with her 3 different times. She's just wonderful to work with. I adored the dogs there. I took Scratch home for an overnight and fell head over heels for him. I can't wait to go back!

To Julie: What a delight to hear! Amra has everything -- great caregivers, wonderful dogs -- and now great volunteers! Congratulations, Julie, on doing this wonderful thing.

Lori & Paul, I am currently planning a volunteering vacation for next year! I am so excited to read your comments! I plan to stay a week and have a sleepover each night--having 4 dogs of my own, I can't imagine a better vacation than to volunteer at Best Friends and spend a week loving and helping the dogs. I can't wait!

To MACHANDLER:

We have four dogs of our own, too! It helped us to jump right in, and it will help you, too!

It was the best vacation we ever had. I just know you are going to have the time of your life. Good for you!

Now, don't be surprised if you start thinking about retiring one day to Kanab and volunteering at Best Friends every day. That's what we're thinking, and I'll bet it will occur to you, too.

Hello, and thanks for the info! I am excitedly planning a trip for my husband and I to volunteer in October this year and found your information helpful (afraid I may not want to come home, except for the 9 dogs anxiously awaiting our return). I think the doggie sleepover sounds like a wonderful idea and I'm glad it was a good experience for you. I'm sure they told you how Amra got it's name (after the Sheriff, Amra the malamute). I just read the Best Friends book by Samantha Glen where she described Sheriff Amra & Deputy Rhonda, such a touching story!

Hi,
Can anyone volunteer? I mean... I am only a freshman in high school, but I was hoping to maybe volunteer in the summer of 2011. Since the next year will be my last one at high school I was hoping I would figure out what I truly want to do.. If its possible, could you send me more information?
Thanks :P

Hi
Can anyone volunteer irrespective of age and what country you come from. I´m a woman from Sweden and I´m 54. I always watch the program Dog Town and I admire what you are doing for the animals. I could easaly dedicate my life for the animal.
From a true animallover / Kristina

Hi, everyone -- I'm sorry to be so late responding!

I'm very pleased to hear that jscott44 and her husband will be volunteering in October. Lori and I will be going back in November. I agree; you just want to stay forever! I also read the Best Friends book (yes, it's a great story!), so I was delighted to see the new Amra and Rhonda areas.

It's wonderful to hear that daisyrules would like to volunteer. I only wish that I had started volunteering when I was your age! Now, I never had to look into the question of how old a volunteer needs to be at Best Friends. I just found some information on the website, though, on this page:

http://www.bestfriends.org/atthesanctuary/angelcanyon/volunteer_info.cfm

It looks like you will be probably be able to volunteer with your parents, and then when you turn 18, you can volunteer by yourself.

Kristina, I'm with you -- I could easily dedicate my life to the welfare of animals. One day, I hope to retire and spend the rest of my life volunteering at Best Friends. It's no surprise that there are volunteers at Best Friends who have done exactly that!

Kristina, I am quite certain that when you go to Best Friends, they will be very happy to have you volunteer. I'm 53 and not as strong as I was 30 years ago, so I just did my best!

Now, the right person to contact to get all the best answers is Kalene, at volunteers@bestfriends.com. She knows more than I ever will, and she's a very nice person.

Good luck to everyone,

Paul

Dear Lin

I just arrived in Oregon and have written to the volenteers staff asking them to allow me to come (with my two dogs and trailer) to Kanab to volenteer permanently.  I just lost my beloved 12 yr.old 'Bmer" in a fire and also lost my home and boyfriend.  I would welcome a ride-a-long if you want me to pick you up.  I too am very limited in funds.  I collect SSI and will only have about $300.00 for the month after paying bills on the 1st so any little bit for gas will help.  Let me know, sjsnyder43@hotmail.com.

So, does anyone know if it's ok to just show up and start working?

Hi Sue,

Well it sounds like you are ready to embark on quite the adventure.  I might suggest you also post your interest in finding a housemate or rider in some other  areas as well. I think most of those reading  this forum are interested in planning a visit to Best Friends and not necessarily moving there.  Is that what you intend on doing, living in Kanab permanently?

Here's the link to the Kanab/Fredonia Group that has a forum where you can start a new topic about what you are looking for in a room mate (if that's the case) and other info about living in the Kanab area:

network.bestfriends.org/.../default.aspx

If you are looking for someone to share a ride down from Oregon, I might suggest the "BF Visitor's Unite Forum" to post in.  That's another popular forum for those planning a tip to the sanctuary:

network.bestfriends.org/.../default.aspx

To arrange volunteering at the sanctuary, be sure you emailed to the following address:

I was at BF with a friend last Spring, for a week (I had been there briefly once before).  And it was truly the best time we have ever spent!  I hope to go back next Spring with two other friends.  I had told my friend all I could about BF before we went, and she had seen the video on the website, and also Dogtown.  But when we got there and took the tour, she teared up and said, no matter what you told me before, this is so much more than I could have imagined!  And so it is.  Everyone needs to spread the word, as I have done.  I now have people (some I don't even know) waiting in line to go with me.

My husband and I will be back for the 4th time in July of next year.  We stay 10 days each year and it's never enough.  As anyone who's had the good fortune to experience the sanctuary knows, it's almost impossible to leave when the time comes.  The work can be hard,  but it's also fun and so completely rewarding that you can't wait to do it again the next morning.   I really think that Best Friends is a sanctuary for people too.  I know it is for me.
