Nationwide, up to 30% of dogs in shelters are pure breeds, and almost all puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills and backyard breeders, and they’re breeding faster than the animal welfare community can find homes for dogs.

Peaceful protests are extremely effective opportunities to educate the public about the realities of puppy mills and the benefits of adopting rather than buying a pet. We actively encourage the public to boycott stores that purchase dogs from irresponsible breeders, and promote adoption from shelters and rescue groups.

Our presence in front of these stores helps people to understand the connection between puppies they see in the pet stores and the cruel and inhumane conditions under which they are bred in addition to the direct impact it has on our already overcrowded shelters.

The way to shut down these breeding operations for good is to take away the profit motive. If people stop buying puppies from the pet store or the Internet, the puppy mill owners will have no incentive to continue operating.

We are also at Barkworks in Orange County (The Shops at Mission Viejo)

Do you know for a fact that these shops are getting their puppies from unethical breeders? I wouldn't want to protest in front of a business just because
they were selling non-rescued dogs.

Of course, there is documented evidence of puppy mills with any pet store that is protested, in addition to mounting evidence from customers who have purchased sick dogs from these stores and testimonials from veterinarians. The overwhelming majority of pet stores (just about all) get their dogs from unethical breeders or puppy mills. This is the only way to keep a constant supply of "stock" and the only way for them to stay in business. No ethical or reputable breeders would ever consider selling to a pet store. Aside from contributing to the deaths of millions of dogs in U.S. shelters each year, these stores are guilty of consumer fraud by telling their customers they obtain their dogs from individual breeders whom they visit in person.
