Vote Today For Your Favorite
Finalists announced for A Puppy Store-Free-USA video contest

We asked and you responded. Creative animal advocates from around the nation submitted 30-second public service announcements for a Best Friends Animal Society contest aimed at exposing the truth about puppy stores.

The three finalists have been chosen and now it’s time for you to help select the winner.

Please go to the A Puppy-Store-Free USA website to pick your favorite. The contestant whose video receives the most votes will win a trip for two to the Best Friends annual Lint Roller Party on Thursday, November 13 at the Hollywood Palladium.

“We were inspired by the response to our invitation to create videos about the ills of puppy mills,” noted Jon Dunn, Best Friends social marketing specialist. “These videos will educate the public that the ‘cute little doggy in the window’ for sale at pet stores probably came from a puppy mill.

“The videos ranged from the simple and poignant, to the very serious, to a humorous approach and they all show that while puppy stores may appear cute they hide an ugly truth. Almost all puppies sold in stores come from puppy mills. In Los Angeles alone, thousands of dogs are killed in shelters each year while hundreds of stores sell purebred puppies, sourced from puppy mills, to an uninformed public.”

Efforts on behalf of Puppy-Store-Free L.A. have already been successful. So far three stores have either closed or at looking at new business models and a fourth may be heading in that direction.

“This video contest is one more step in Best Friends’ ongoing efforts to end the exploitive breeding of dogs and to change the practices of the stores that sell the puppies,” Dunn said.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1. Please go to the Puppy-Store-Free USA website and vote for your favorite. Remember to choose carefully, as each person receives only one vote. Hurry, the deadline to vote is Sunday, October 19.

2. For more information on how you can get involved in the fight to close down puppy stores in your own community, please visit Don’t Buy Puppies.

Very hard choice! I finally went with the one I thought would get the widest range of people's attention. Great work, all.

We can NEVER say it enough that pet stores are not the place to buy a puppy. I am amazed that some people are still not aware of what goes on behind this money making business. The real truth, the images - hurts but we have to get this message out. For those French speaking people - here is also my message in French : Acheter un chien dans une animalerie est la pire des choses à faire ! Je suis surprise qu'il y a des gens qui ne savent pas ce qui se passe derrière la 'vitrine'. Tout cela, uniquement pour enrichir certains, sans scrupules. La réalité et les images font mal mais nous devons parler ...

I would just like to point out the deadline for voting for the best video has been extended to October 25! So you have a little extra time to spread the word and get more votes! The more votes received means the more attention the campaign is getting and that is, of course, the whole point! So pass the link along to all your friends and family and get them to vote too! Post it on your MySpace and Facebook pages, your personal blogs, everywhere!

I think the more we all can do to make the public aware of how bad it is to buy a puppy from a pet store the better. I have noticed lately that Nickldian. Channel has been airing more PETLAND commercials that I wish they would not.
