Putting Cruelty Out of Business
179 dogs rescued from puppy mill in Virginia -- The story begins

There were pugs and pomeranians, westies, scotties, beagles, chihuahuas, poodles, shih tzus, cocker spaniels, and dachshunds...to name a few. Some were pregnant females who had clearly been cruelly over-bred for years and years. In all, there were 179 dogs and puppies who had never been allowed to play on the grass or be held or hugged. These were the animals that Best Friends and local animal groups in Virginia rescued from a dilapidated puppy mill late in the night of Friday, October 12, and into dawn the next day.

The puppy mill in question was operating under medieval conditions—kerosene lamps, no electricity, small confinement cages, and no running water. In March of this year, it caught fire and, tragically, nearly 200 dogs and puppies lost their lives.

The puppy mill owner wanted to rebuild, but Best Friends joined other rescue organizations and lobbied local officials for higher standards on puppy mill facilities. As a result, officials rejected the breeder’s bid to rebuild and stay in operation—and at least this one puppy mill was forced out of business.

Frustrated, the puppy mill owner declared that if he couldn't find another puppy mill to buy the dogs, he'd "rather sell all the dogs at auction than see them go to animal rescuers."

Dogs sold at public auction are typically purchased by brokers representing commercial breeders and animal researchers.

"No way were we going to let the surviving dogs go to auction," says Paul Berry, Best Friends' executive director. "Given all they'd been through, the prospect of their moving on to another puppy mill- or worse, ending up in a research lab- it was just out of the question."

So Best Friends arranged a third party purchase of all the remaining dogs to ensure their protection from further abuse. "It was the responsible, ethical thing to do," says Berry.

As joyful as the scene was on Saturday, seeing all the dogs get their first tastes of freedom, the "undercover" purchase the night before was tense and exhasuting for the team. Best Friends rescue staff and local partners waited for hours in the misty Virginia night as the dogs were removed from the puppy mill facility by ones and twos to our waiting, unmarked trucks.

Once the dogs were all finally in our custody, they were whisked to a nearby secure location where local volunteers worked through the night to attend to the dogs' immediate medical needs and prepare them for transport the next day.

By Sunday, all the dogs rescued from the puppy mill—and the three litters of puppies born during rescue operations—had been taken from Virginia to the Pets Alive facility in New York.

Over the next few weeks, Best Friends staff veterinarians and behaviorists will be managing medical issues as well as advising an ongoing assessment of the impact of puppy mill confinement on the dogs’ physical and mental health. During that time, we’ll also be coordinating with breed rescue organizations across the nation to find forever homes for all the Virginia rescue dogs. A few of the dogs- in particular older dogs whose health has been too compromised by years of forced breeding- will return to the Best Friends sanctuary in Utah for long-term medical care and a new life.

We’ll have much more information about the Virginia puppy mill rescue operation as the story unfolds over the coming few weeks.

While this is just great for all the poor dogs that were in such terrible conditions, why so secret? I assume a more in depth explanation will be forthcoming, but I'm confused.

Oh my - the poor beagle in the top picture. Can you give us any info about her? She looks so old, tired and overbred...

Poor babies

that may sadly be so....but just LOOK at that smile as she trots across the grass, for what may be the first time in her life!
She looks happy! :)

My heart is breaking I could hardly stand to read the story.. Is there any where to where or a limit to what BFs can do?
They again were there where they were so needed.
I applaud their efforts and pray for the day that there are no more places such as this.
How can we call ourself humans and allow this to happen over and over again.
How can we stop this once and for all???
God bless those that went in to save those and god rest the souls that were taken in the fire....
My only comfort is knowing that thsoe souls are over the rain bow bridge where no more harm can ever come to them.
I will be following this closely and watching for news on this.
Thank you for all that you have done to end this suffering.

Thank you, thank you Best Friends for rescuing these dogs before they were sold at auction for laboratory research. That would have been even worse for them. They've been through enough. If ever there was a Nobel Prize for animal welfare, Best Friends would be the recipient, hands down. God bless you for the wonderful work you do.

Wow! Thank you Best Friends Crew, I can only imagine what they must have been like. Bless you, taking one step at a time is how the journey will be completed in turning this world into a kinder place for all animals and people.

Thank you. Thanks to all that helped stop this horrible man and his horrid business. I too am wondering though - if a puppy mill is shut down due to inhumane conditions - surely the owner is not allowed to do what he wishes with the animals? Aren't they 'rescued' so a 'secret' purchase wasn't necessary? God I can't believe the antiquated laws that would shut down a puppy mill but let the owner dispose of the animals in anyway he sees fit. I mean my god, he could have had his own secret buyers out there!

It just makes me sick that people can get away with running these mills. Thanks for stepping in and rescuing these pups-no matter how you went about it.

Human cruelty will never cease to amaze me! This man should be put in jail and left there to rot for the rest of his life. Thank you Best Friends for going above and beyond the call of duty. This is the very reason why I am a strong supporter of BF.
God bless you.

Wow! There are times when words like “Great Job” do not begin to feel adequate, no matter how many explanation points you use. This is beyond that. To everyone form top-level people willing to be a bit creative in the acquisition, to those who worked on the front lines and to future caregivers of these formerly lost soles, I can only say thank you! You did a REALLY GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!! Drats! Still not enough!

Once again I am amazed at the wonderful things Best Friends accomplishes. I am so grateful to be a part of this organization and a big thanks to all who make these miracles happen!

Puppy Mill Awareness Day is honored to work with Best Friends. The outcome of this operation is wonderful and couldn't have been done without a group like yours. This rescue along with the recent rescue of hundreds of dogs from mills around the country is what the public needs to see. Our new campaign "Adopt -Don't Shop" will be in place from now through the holidays. Please make sure that people understand there is never a reason to purchase a pet while shelters and rescue groups are filled.

As someone who lives in the general vicinity of that sickening puppy mill, it was hard to watch and read local coverage of the horrible tragedy that occurred when the fire claimed all those dogs' lives earlier this year. However, it was worse to see that the owner was going to be allowed to re-establish his cruel money-making venture. No words can express how proud and pleased I am that these animals have been rescued. Good for you!!!!!

I was at Pets Alive bright and early Sunday morning - and I was overwhelmed by these adorable little dogs. These dogs, despite everything they've been through, KNOW they are safe. And for dogs who have never had one ounce of kindness shown to them, they were some of the happiest dogs I've ever seen - big smiles, wagging tails and literally jumping for joy at the very sight of a volunteer coming their way. It doesn't matter how they came to be at BF, only that they ARE at BF, where they will finally have a chance at a real future. Kudos to all involved!

Posted 16 Oct 2007 12:01 PM by iPhoenix66
While some of the dogs are not in the best of conditions, there are still some great dogs that came in, and they are really happy and friendly. If you know anyone in the NY,NJ, PA, or CT areas, and they want to adopt, tell them about Pets Alive, I see no reason why these dogs shouldn't be going home.

Posted 16 Oct 2007 12:26 PM by njanmlrsq3
I was there Sunday morning as well. I have to give props to the volunteers who showed up and pitched in. We stayed well into the evening and I don't think there wasn't a single dog or puppy that was shown some kind of love by the volunteers. I know there were a few that I just held and hugged.

You know, this is what Best Friends does. This is what it is all about.

Posted 16 Oct 2007 12:41 PM by judylew
I think it's wonderful what BF did. I read a blog about all the volunteers who showed up at Pets Alive. Kudos to all of you, too. I bet it was a sight to behold. I would love to see how the dogs/puppies react once they're settled in and have some roaming room. What a joy it must be to them. Please keep us posted!

Way to go guys! Next up is ending puppymill sales in nearby Christiansburg!

Our Virginia Tech student animal rights group NRV-CARE helped prevent the owners of this puppy mill from moving to nearby Giles County. We also work against the puppies for sale in the Zooquatic store. Anyone who is concerned with this issue, I urge you to contact the owner of this store and ask that in light of the recent victory over the Bland County puppymill, he end sales of puppy mill puppies. Please visit our group's website for more information. Our next protest outside the store is on Oct. 27th from 11 AM to 2 PM

Thanks for all you do!

THAT WAS ONE SLEEPLESS NIGHT THAT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!!

thank you so much for LETTING us help with the rescue. Carrying in puppy crates at 3:00 in the morning was not the way i spend every saturday night/sunday morning... but the kisses from the lovies were WELL worth it. As volunteers we love every minute we spend helping the critters, staff and rest of the volunteers in Any Project that BestFriends has in store for us at Pets Alive.
Thank you Best Friends for your work... and allowing us to be a part of it.

I just sent in my donation for this special rescue. Thank you BF and Pets Alive staff & volunteers, you are truly saving angels for these precious dogs.
The senior beagle girl...I want to just take her up in my arms & let her know everything is going to be alright now, but you kind folks are already doing that. Her joy in feeling the good earth, warm sunshine, sweet grass and finally, finally, Love, is so evident.

Your news article mentions the "medieval conditions", but fails to include that the operators were Amish. That fact provides some explanation for the conditions, as opposed to other theories such as saving money, or because the animals were not respected.

Please note that I am not attempting to defend the owners - I'm just providing a fact I feel should be included in this story.

Here are links to local newspaper articles which cover your purchase of the animals:

As far as I'm concerned, there is NEVER any explanation for treating animals this way - I don't care what the circumstances of the individual(s) might be - there is NEVER, NEVER any explanation for this sort of behavior.

Having said that - HUGE KUDOS and an even BIGGER THANK YOU to all involved, Best Friends staff and all the wonderful volunteers who spent their time, some for hours into the dead of night, to make sure these poor babies were out of harm's way and into the safe, loving arms of people who will care for them and take care of them. If I lived close enough, I certainly would have been there as well. THANK YOU EVERYONE INVOLVED. There are 179 babies with happy smiles on their faces, and a bright future ahead of them - and they will never have to be bred again. What joy this brings to my heart. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

Posted 16 Oct 2007 8:31 PM by bogiedew
Just because you are Amish, that is not an excuse to disrespect animals. Is there a reason why this man refused to let these dogs go to a rescue?

Posted 16 Oct 2007 8:53 PM by Squeakie42
The "operators" were Amish? You HAVE to be kidding. I find it extremely difficult to believe that someone who belongs to a group that supposedly values moral and ethical ways of living would be so vindictive and uncaring. And if s/he in fact is Amish, then that's sad & twisted. I'd just like to see where, in any religious group's statement of beliefs and practices, it is deemed to be OK to engage in a cruelty akin to slavery.

Posted 16 Oct 2007 9:41 PM by bls5966
Does anyone know who to get in touch with about adopting these sweet babies?

Posted 16 Oct 2007 10:41 PM by judylew
When they are ready to be adopted it might be posted on the Pets Alive website.

As far as the kennel owner being Amish, I noticed the article mentioned he had a telephone. So doesn't that mean that he has electricity in his home? I know there are a couple of different sects of Amish. One practices more modern methods including having modern conveniences.

Posted 17 Oct 2007 1:04 AM by noblebird
Thank you BF for continuing to carry out the mission of protecting animals. The Amish have many huge breeder operations in that area, and if this is, in fact, one of theirs, one by one we can make a difference, a humane difference for the animals. I just started reading Winograd's book, Redemption, and as he recounts the words of the founder of the ASPCA, "[bettering the plight of animals] is a matter purely of conscience. It has no perplexing side issues.... it is a moral question in all its aspects." Hooray for BF and Berry to make the moral choice for the betterment of the animals. Breeders and killing shelters no longer have a place in our society. If we all individually protested the AKC for promoting animal slavery for profit and reported every breeder we find, ONE by ONE we will return to the original mission of that founder and the mission of BF -- save and protect, not kill for the sake of society or space.

Squeakie42, alot of Amish run puppy mills..ever heard of Lancaster, PA?

Posted 17 Oct 2007 9:05 AM by rad123
Cathie - thank you for directing me to Mabel's blog.

I can't believe this poor old dog is PREGNANT!!! I don't know who in their right mind would think that making a half blind, senior dog with only a few teeth and tumors have another litter was the right thing to do.

Fingers crossed that her tumors aren't malignant, although I don't think chances are good given that she's older, unspayed and never had medical care :-(

Poor little girl - at least Best Friends will take care of her now.

Posted 17 Oct 2007 10:19 AM by veganmarcy
Lancaster and nearby counties aka "Dutch Country PA" are INFAMOUS for puppy mills...the Amish there have found it 'useful' to take advantage of smaller land plots (due to having to split inheritances between several sons as per tradition and # of children) buy STACKING aka piling dog cage on top of dog cages and running decrepit, cheap, and high-profit puppy mills. then the dogs (and also cats) on-site that die from such conditions are thrown dead onto the fields that produce the often-advertised Amish produce, aka brand name "Pennsylvania Produce". Here's the links about the produce, and why it should be boycotted: http://www.lcanimal.org/cmpgn/cmpgn_pasecret.htm
http://www.awarenessday.org/main.htm
This is also why the Governor of PA has been trying to replace and expand the existing animal/kennel type inpsectors, because of how corrupt and uncaring the existing ones were. Frankly, the laws about dogs and especially cats in PA are bending over backwards for hoarders and puppy mills, and there are very little - esp. in rural areas where both groups tend to operate - laws against it. And no one usually enforces what laws are there. I have had much personal experience and heartache over this trying to fight a large-scale hoarder in rural PA - one who has also had dealing with the Amish. If you would like more information to fight against both this hoarder and advocating for enforcement of proper animal protection and investigation in PA, please contact kittychump via BF network search "CWNN" or directly to http://network.bestfriends.org/Blogs/Detail.aspx?b=1449. Can anyone explain to me why this is legal? I just can't imagine ANYONE thinking this is OK. AND for the "owner" to say he would rather auction than let these dogs be rescued - doesn't that just show what sort of people we're dealing with?! They should not be allowed within 10 feet of any animal. Thank goodness these dogs got lucky - thank you BF!!

Posted 17 Oct 2007 1:29 PM by magicsquirt
Thank God at least some are safe.

The Amish are Huge puppymillers. Their bottom line is: money. money. money. . So, how godly is that? They abuse virtually all their animals.

When it comes to the Amish, what you see on the surface is, sadly, not the real story. At least not anymore.. To all out there, like myself, who say, "what can I do to stop this", a small place to start is to boycott Anything Amish, including all those appealing tourist attractions. Our family used to love visiting our nearby Amish communities, we used to shop the stores and bakeries, we were perfect, money-spitting tourists. Now we know better!

Thanks to all the volunteers who made this one rescue possible....

Posted 17 Oct 2007 3:07 PM by doggone
Here's another local story on this purchase, including an interview with the owner of the puppy farm.
Dog breeder tells his side of the story

He states that Best Friends attorney Russ Mead was present at the sale when the contract was signed. He already knew who Mead was from his attendance at the Bland County Planning Commission hearing. So this operation may not have been quite as covert as it seems.

Posted 17 Oct 2007 3:39 PM by tamarad
To those who may be shocked at the Amish being puppy-millers, it has been known within the rescue community that unfortunately this is now how the Amish make the bulk of their funds. It has replaced tourism AFAIK when it comes to a big money maker for them.
Sad, but very true.

How can this be legal?? As long as the AKC allows puppy mill puppies to be registered, it will be continued.

Posted 17 Oct 2007 3:55 PM by beegee93
Thank you for all your hard work and efforts. We live very close to this Amish family and have been shocked at everything that has happened to these animals. We could hear the barks & cries of the dogs trapped in misery. This family needed to move
years ago to be with the other White Gate Amish community. Once again thank you from a "local" who appreciates your efforts and hard work!

Posted 17 Oct 2007 4:47 PM by joles52
I posted a comment to the initial story before I realized it was an Amish puppy mill and that was the basis of my comment. Guess somehow I just knew. I think alot of people are just becoming aware that the Amish have gotten into this business. I live near an Amish community in the Southern Tier near Buffalo. I use to LOVE to go there from the time I was a child but the more I hear about their lives the more repulsed I am becoming...GOD FEARING is a sham, they not only abuse their animals but from stories I've seen on tv their own children. They are a disgrace. I visited Best Friends 2 yrs. ago & volunteered and took back to my own rescue group such enthusiasm & a boost as to what can be done. The good will prevail over the evil..Just Believe!!!

Posted 17 Oct 2007 5:54 PM by Unionanimals
I used to live in PA, where there is a huge presence of Amish run puppy mills. To demonstrate the attitudes of the Amish, there was an article in the newspaper quite some time ago by an Amish man stating he does not know why people get so emotional over dogs and that they are just like any other "CROP"!

Posted 17 Oct 2007 8:02 PM by rmlamasney25
Not to mention how you see those poor buggy horses are made to trot on the asphalt day after day....doubt very much they get Legend or glucosamine!

Posted 17 Oct 2007 8:35 PM by Kelle23
I just wanted to add my thanks to the piles of others here. I love this website because it tells the truth and doesn't sugar coat anything, but still stays upbeat and looks on the brighter side. For an animal rights advocate who is very sensitive to cruelty issues, it's a wonderful thing. You guys are the best and help me remember every day that some humans are actually worthwhile!

I want to thank Best Friends for all the hard work they put into, and will continue to expend on this effort. I do take offense though to noblebirds comment that there are a lot of puppy mills in the area, which is a false statement. I live here and puppy mills are not common. This was pretty much an isolated incident . Despite the fact it is a rural area, we pretty much don't put up with any sort of animal abuse and have wonderful groups in the area who keep on top of things. Thanks again for all your help.

Posted 18 Oct 2007 11:54 AM by putzygirl
Thank you for helping these wonderful animals. I now have 2 puppy mill dogs. I know how difficult it can be to socialize them. It takes a lot of time & effort. They are not "crops" They've had such a hard time just getting used to someone petting them. I hope that someday, we can shut down all the puppy mills.

Posted 18 Oct 2007 8:09 PM by patlab
Are there any politician who has enough heart and integrity to do something about the situation? To work on changing th elaws? Unfortunately, unless the laws are changed, animals will keep being abused for the sake of making money.

I used to admire the Amish, now I have realized their true nature.

Posted 18 Oct 2007 11:53 PM by njanmlrsq3
Hey any update on our star at the top there, Mabel? She stated that she was going to have a c-section today. Hey Mabel, can ya give us an update?

We all must write our political officials and insist that stronger laws are made to outlaw these horrendous places called "Puppy Mills" once and for all. They must be stopped dead in their tracks and laws are the only way to accomplish this.
Get out your pens and paper and start writing folks!

It is truly sad that someone would rather auction off these animals than have them go to homes. What is wrong with people? I have been in rescue about 10 years and the cruelty seems to be getting worse. We are a throw away society and the way we treat our animals is a sign of that. I wish I knew where the kennel owner was coming from? Why in the world would he want these animals to go research labs, etc.? This is really disturbing.
Not only do Pennsylvania laws favor the cruel and barbaric practice of puppy mills, but also Missouri.
No one can get through to the legislators. The Amish in IN also have puppymills.

Posted 19 Oct 2007 9:25 PM by catgrrl
I agree that it's heartbreaking that the owner of the puppy mill would rather see these animals have a life of horror, by being sent to a laboratory, than have caring people adopt them. Where does such a brutal heart come from? How very sad.

Thank you Best Friends! I own 7 dogs, 2 were rescues from a horrible puppy mill in Phoenix AZ and I swear they are GRATEFUL. They had such a hard life for five years, and now they've had five with love. They are the best pets - adopt one if you can!

I, too, want to express great THANKS to BF for their love, devotion, & energy for these animials, as well as, others who have been rescued. Just so you know I recently opened up a airbrush/body jewelry store here in TN. My plan is to airbrush t-shirts with a logo to help save animals. 10% of the money made will be donated to Best Friends Network. It cost a lot of money to care and support these precious ones. Plus i recently donated $200 for this rescue. I hope the tumors are negative, and all is ok. THANKS AGAIN BF, and all of you who support them. If anyone can think of a great fundraiser, I would love to bring it together and help these babies....Thanks Myra

I just don't understand the mentality of the people who do this kind of thing. Is the money so great that it's worth putting these poor creatures through so much missery? Are these people going to be arrested and made to pay for their actons?

I am in tears reading this article. I love my dogs so much. I can't imagine any dog being treated this way! What is wrong with someone that they can do this to a sweet innocent dog? It makes me so mad! Thanks best friends for your love of animals and caring enough to help out in situations like this.

I'm torn because I feel SO VERY SAD AND DISGUSTED and I would like to say some terrible things to all of these people, however, as a Christian I cannot do so. All I can say is May God have mercy on your souls.....because YOU'RE GOING TO NEED IT!!!!

Posted 20 Oct 2007 1:08 PM by mauiranch
A ghastly fact - approximately 4% of the human race are sociopaths. Then there are a lot of folks who are just motivated by greed. That leaves the rest of us to make up for the horrors they wreak on mother earth and all her children. There is no explanation for why this is the case. I guess the best we can do is learn to identify these monsters and somehow contain them before they can do more harm.

Posted 21 Oct 2007 9:59 PM by Hope
Another ghastly fact, mauiranch. If a person could do something this horrible to an animal, he/she could do it to a human. It's proven that most serial killers & violent murderers tortured &/or killed animals when they were kids. People like this monster who owned the puppy mill make me ashamed to be a human being. I wonder what extraterrestrials would think of us?.....

Posted 22 Oct 2007 11:06 AM by CathNJ
Jenn32.... no worries - I will say those "not so Christian" things FOR YOU! I got it alllll covered! i have no issues with that. God will forgive me for saying them!

You folks are so wonderful and caring...it is very heartwarming to see the pains you go through to rescue the poor abused animals. If I were a millionaire, I would give so much money to help with your cause. I live in the Katrina zone and I give to our local Humane Society as there is still a great need in South Mississippi. Keep up the good work!

I have often said that the meanest animal walks on two legs (and in this case has a beard). The Amish are reknown for their puppy mills. However, that being said...we are also privy to the best with the founders, workers, and volunteers of BFAS. Each of us just needs to remember to spread the word and educate every person we know who has a purebreed about the horrors of puppy-milling. We must also contact the AKC, the NSDA, and our state and federal representatives regarding the ending of milling for profit. Until we all start making some loud noises, this will continue. Kudos to the group below for picketing their local puppy mart. I make it a habit of going into pet store with photos from puppy mills to show everyone looking at the puppies. Remember, each of us can make a small difference, and, together, we are changing the world. Nothing happens overnight, but through persistance we can do it!

THANK YOU for your wonderful work. This story reminds me why I unconditionally love animals...but am suspect of people.

Forget about contacting the AKC. They get $$ for every puppy mill dog that is registered with them. They could care less about the conditions these poor animals live in or if the registered dogs are healthy or not.

The AKC not only doesn't care about puppy mill dogs, they lobby for the interests of the puppy millers.

Which are no rules, no licensing, no regulation, no vet care, PRO chaining or keeping dogs outside, and on and on and on

Look anywhere people are trying to pass tougher laws to reduce the abuse, and you will find AKC, AKC legislative liasons, breed clubs, and other AKC affiliates fighting AGAINST those laws (and telling horrific lies to oppose them.)

The AKC now makes most of their income from puppy mill registrations. They have a business arrangement with Hunte Corporation, the notorious puppy mill broker in Missouri who buys from breeders like Mabel's AKC is trying to get a business relationship together with Petland, the notorious puppy mill pet store who buys from Hunte and others.

Those puppy mill registration dollars pay for fancy dog shows and AKC activities and salaries!

AKC has registered fewer and fewer litters in the last 10 yrs due to their kicking out of the registry places like this puppy mill.

Yes AKC was going to let the Hunte corp. register their dogs with AKC but the pure bred responsible breeders and show people raised a very big call against this happening and it was overturned.

Most of the puppy mills now register with CKC -continential kennel club or APR. This is where you go when you are kicked out of AKC for not having proper conditions or paper work.

Petland is horrible but pet people are out there buying from them- paying much bigger prices then they would from a reputable breeder.

Those of us who do go to shows and performance events are paying more and more for entries because AKC isn't registering the 1000's of dogs produced by the worst of the mills.

The rest of us have a small amount of dogs which we make sure are happy and healthy- probably more healthy then alot of pet peoples dogs. We test our dogs and search our pedigrees to do the proper breedings rather than leave it to chance.

I think it is wonderful that these little dogs have been saved from such a horrible life. The people who keep dogs like this are low lifes- low in thier level of consciousness and probably dont really know what they have missed from these loving little dogs. They dont know what love is or they wouldnt have treated them like this.

Who can describe what a puppy mill is??? I think it is a level of care -emotionally and physically that gives their animals a chance to learn and love.

mkddachs, either you are intentionally sowing propaganda here, or you have no idea what the AKC is up to.

The AKC has been in business with Hunte Corporation for many years. That is an ONGOING business relationship.

The AKC by its own admission makes 80 percent of its income on PUPPY MILL REGISTRATIONS.

The AKC has a Large Volume Breeders Committee (puppy mills) to get these business deals in place.

That is the money that is paying for your dog shows and other fun and games while puppy mill dogs suffer and die.

Meanwhile, you and your breeder friends lobby against ALL rules, ALL laws, ANYTHING that might reduce some of this suffering.

That is what the AKC legislative division is all about- lobbying FOR things like puppy mills, against anticruelty laws, against any kind of laws to protect dogs.

And AKC constituents gladly comply and talk of love for dogs, but fight against meaningful change.

Your lobby has been blinded by selfishness.

(And AKC leadership voted FOR the Petland deal. It got derailed temporarily, but word is they are going to try it again.)

Meanwhile those AKC inspectors? Check this and see how the millers feel about an AKC inspector who looks the other way while the horrors go on http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/Arkansas.html and a quote "The auctioneers introduced the AKC inspector as a good guy who was on the side of the commercial kennels."
