Personal testimony: Part of the family

The Hocraths and Oscar

Oscar sits patiently as 4-year-old Hailey and 6-year-old Parker fit him with a colorful array of different hats. He doesn’t even squirm when Hailey decides to place a princess tiara on his head.

The things a guy has to put up with!

Oscar, a 2-year-old pit bull, is a refugee from Denver. Heather Hocrath, Parker and Hailey’s mom, fell in love with Oscar the moment she first saw him at a nearby no-kill sanctuary located in the beautiful mountains of Divide, Colo.

“I squatted down to meet him and he knocked me on my butt,” said Heather, who works as a training coordinator for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado Springs. “I just fell in love with him.”

With two small children, Heather made sure Oscar was trained and socialized. He’s turned out to be the perfect family dog.

“He’s so good with kids,” Heather said. “He’s very patient with the kids, very gentle. I really love the breed.”

Heather doesn’t understand why places like Denver ban dogs like Oscar.
“I think it’s ridiculous,” Heather said. “I don’t see it as being much different than the prejudices against race and color.”

Luckily for Oscar, he managed to get out of Denver alive and find a brand new family.

“He’s so sweet,” Heather said. “I don’t see how anyone could not love him.”

Hello, see the happiness in Oscar's eyes! He loves his pack (sister and brother, and you). God Bless you! Treat dogs as if they were your family (which they are, and they will never let you down)! You displayed great courage!

Oscar is a very special and lucky fellow!!! He came from the streets of Denver. When he arrived at Mariah's Promise, his name was 'Nuba'. When a family came to visit 'Nuba', their 3-yr old son was following him around, doing the best he could to pronounce his name ... 'Noodle'. So he became Noodle. Fabulous with all our other dogs, loved everyone he would meet ... but when 'Noodle' met the Hocrath family, the rest, as they say, was history!! He was ALL ABOUT them. They have since been back to add 'Roxie' their family, another Denver exile ... MANY THANKS to the Hocrath's for giving two very deserving dogs a real home and family!!! Love ya! Toni

I have been around pitbulls and they are a very loving and loyal breed. Any breed can be vicious if the owner allows it. I am so tired of people putting a label on these breeds. I have a friend who has a 120lb. pit named Hoss and he's my baby.

We also have a Pit Bull, the city has cracked down on them and they have to be registered and we are supposed to have a million dollar rider to our homeowners policy too. We haven't done either. Whitey is a real sweetheart, he has been raised around kids and other dogs and has not shown any agression towards either one. He is currently residing with a Yorkie, we call Whitey *Brett's Bodyguard*. The Pit Bull has gotten such a bad rap, it's a shame. It's all in the upbringing. They really can become affectionate and loving as any other dog...it's all in the upbringing...
