Today's update on Bill

He is not talking except to answer direct questions, although yesterday he asked Lee if she had "gone for lunch yet". He's eating a few mouthfuls of cream of wheat for breakfast, a few mouthfuls of tomato soup for lunch with a few bits of fruit and a little more soup for supper. And he's drinking some water. One of these days "fairly soon" he'll stop eating and drinking and the family (all of us) have been told not to push him to "try a few mouthfuls". We were told when I was nursing that eating at the end can add to discomfort for the patient, and when I said that to Lee and Angie the doctor said "exactly".

But PTL, no headaches yet!!!! We're finding that we're grateful for "little blessings". Of course, he'll get as much pain medication as he needs, but that does mean less interaction with us. We were down on Thursday and will go back down either Tuesday or Thursday (I've appointments that can't be changed except with long waits Monday and Wednesday).

We don't live an "organized" schedule by any means, but even the un-organized one has gotten thrown into the jumble-pile, and we're always ready to head south at a single phone call. Until next Monday, we're the closed family, as my sister-in-law is visiting in the States and the airline won't change their tickets unless Bill actually dies. Ugly business practice that, isn't it?

With a very sad heart I am letting everyone know that little sweet adorable Lamby went to the Bridge last night. His injuries were just too much and he was given wings to soar again at the bridge in health.

I am heart broken but I know it is for the best.

I tried to insert a picture of him with all of his hair but it won't take it in the form I have it. Just know he was so precious.

Because it's in his jaw/mouth all they can do is make him comfortable until it's time to get his wings.

Sam has his wings

Sam's condition deteriorated over the weekend. I talked with his vet yesterday about options and waited until this morning to make a decision. I was up at 4:30 and when I checked on Sam he was worse. His appointment in Ames was at 11:00 so I planned to leave by 6:00 for a 41/2 hour drive. I prepared as though I was going to Ames, packing for an overnight stay. Putting off the decision until 6:00

I checked on him several times but there was no change. I guess I thought he would "wake" up but no. I decided to take him to his regular vet and give him his wings. She had told me that if I made that decision to just bring him to the clinic. I was there when they opened.

This was a terribly hard decision to make. I know we have all been there and it is never easy. But I believe this was the best decision for my Sam.

Sam was 14 years old and a flame point meezer mix kitty boy.

Prayers of a different kind, please...

My dearest forum family,

Prayers are needed here for a different reason than I have ever had before. You see, My husband and I found a little puppy, today, running as fast as it could down the center of the highway. We were on our way to my Mom's for her birthday and had gotten about a mile from home and this puppy was running the same way we were going and when we caught up with her we stopped, I opened the door and whistled. She then proceeded to circle the car, twice, and on the second loop she jumped up into my lap and proceeded to lick my face off. Needless to say she is very friendly.

I've stuffed mail boxes with flyers and e-mailed everyone I know close by, but I'm afraid she was dumped "out in the country" the way so many people do with litters they don't want.

We cannot keep her. I have an awful flea allergy. All of my cats are strictly indoor cats so they have no fleas. She is so precious and I'm hoping to get a call from a distraught owner that has lost their puppy so I can get her back to them. But I'm not holding my breath. Second best would be to find someone that wants this precious little jewel.

She is so cute. Looks to be about 12 weeks old, black and red, looks to have some rottie in her, maybe some shepherd....don't know what else...she is just precious.

If you can spare some...please ask a prayer or two that we can find this sweet baby a wonderful forever home.

Could you please add Bonito to the 11/23 Candle Ceremony? He recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is being placed at Angels Overlook this afternoon.

He was one of the Best Friends sanctuary cats who lived in Jill's Diner and has been one of my many favorites.

Bonito, you will be very missed and I'm so glad to have gotten the opportunity to say good-bye last month.

Bill going downhill quickly now

Ted's sister Chris called tonight, Bill has gone down very quickly in the last couple days. He's going into hospice tomorrow morning, fortunately the one close to them. Our prayers are for a peaceful, gentle crossing and strength for Lea, Angie and David, as well as comfort for Mother.

Yesterday he fell twice and the second time Lee couldn't get him up again. She called the hospice nurse who came right away, and between them they got Bill back up and into bed. He's no longer talking except to say he wants something to drink or he has to use the bathroom.

I said to Chris that I'd call Lee and she suggested I call in the morning. She'd just been talking to her and Lee really was having a hard time talking. So I'll call tomorrow instead. We'll go down to Calgary but I want to talk to Lee to find out when would be the best time.

I've been trying to get Ted to go to Ontario for a few days to see his Mom, but that's off until we find out what's going to happen here.

Linda's not coming to Edmonton right now, but tomorrow is Pat's cataract surgery, so I told them not to worry about supper, I'd take over a casserole.... likely Chicken Shepherd's Pie. Then Jim can make a salad and call it supper.

Wonder if the merry-go-round will slow down so we can change horses. I think I'd like to try that black one over there.

Linda update

I just got back from Pat's and Al called while we were there. We're now waiting to find out if they can get Linda back to Edmonton tomorrow. She can no longer sit up or walk, her pain is back with a vengence. 3/4 of a grain of morphine is not completely controlling it and must be repeated every three hours. Even a little bit of food or fluids is causing bloating which only adds to the pain.

And, of course, nothing comes singly.... Pat has cataract surgery tomorrow morning. I told her that if Linda is transferred I'll meet Al at the hospital, but that doesn't help Pat feeling that she's letting her down.

Would you please add them to your prayers when lighting your candles tonight?

Ak A friend for HSN

Please add my best friend Mary to the human special needs list. She was retrieving a book last night and took a step backward tripping on her chubby tuxedo cat Sissy. Sissy got stepped on in the ensuing 'dance', but appears to be okay. Mary however, did something to her knee and she cannot move laterally or pivot without pain. If she does not move she said it does not hurt. Her brother Bill is taking her to the local Urgent Care since her ortho (that did her other knees surgery a few years ago) is not available until after Thanksgiving.

It was just down the street from my work and happened about lunch time. Also please add the city truck driver that struck him to special needs. The investigation is ongoing, but this is a very busy street especially at lunch hour.

Hi! I'm Hero!

I'm only 4 years old and I've had a rough life.

I was badly abused and then abandoned on the streets to die. I lived under a porch, and survived (barely) by eating bread. I got frostbite on my ears and paws. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, someone trapped me and took me to Animal Services. I caught a really bad infection there, and they put me on Death Row!

Fortunately, some very kind people rescued me, nursed me back to health, and I became a beautiful, shiny cat. It was heaven!

Now, however, I have a very nasty kind of cancer called lymphoblastic lymphoma. My people took me to the vet and I'm getting medicine.

I am very grateful for the time I've had with mypeople and I don't want to leave just yet. Please keep me in your prayers. Please keep my people in your prayers too. They are having a harder time dealing with this than I am!

Update on "Lamby"

I heard from Lamby's mom this weekend. Sunday they were going to give him is doggie angel wings and release him from his suffering. HOWEVER, they discovered why he was going down hill. He was having a bad reaction to the pain medication. Each day he go on a downward slide, they would increase his meds, then they discovered that the pain meds were the problem! Lamby was granted a repreive and has started doing better. He is eating and drinking on his own again. He has rebounded a bit but he is not out of the woods just yet. It is a positive sign though.

They have decided to wait to see what happens. If he continues to improve then they will make further decisions as to what care he needs. Right now it is still wound care and getting him stable. There are some other things going on with him but they can't do anything about them at the moment.

your prayers are surely helping! Thank you so much and Please Please keep them coming. Lamby is a sweet fluff ball and he's just adorable!

Three and a half years ago he came stumbling into our lives. We didn't know his name, so we started calling him "Mystery Dog", which got shortened to "MD" which in then turned into Doc. He reminded us of a wise old country doctor. We later found out that his name was Albert, but he answered to Doc for us and we wanted to give him a new start, with a better name and a better chance.

His story is not a pretty one. He was estimated to be between 14 and 16 years old. When he barked, he sounded like a goose with a sore throat. He was a hunting beagle who had spent his life in a pen with who knows how many other beagles, fighting to get to the food bowl. He had suffered from abuse and neglect, he was almost blind, almost deaf, had bad hips, bad knees, and heartworm. When we found his "owner" and told them what the vet had said, we were told that they had bought him as a stud, but that he was worthless and they were going to take him out back and shoot him. We told them that we would take him off of their hands. Our vet gave him six months and joked that we should open a home for geriatric dogs (at the time I had one dog getting ready to turn 16 and had just lost my almost 15 year old wolf dog). Since he wasn't strong enough to go through the standard treatment for heartworm, we put him on Heartguard with the hope that if he lived long enough, it would eliminate what heartworm there was. We couldn't get him neutered because his heart wasn't strong enough to survive the anesthesia, and since the two females we had were spayed, it wasn't that big of a deal. Doc stood guard over Bear when her brain tumor started causing seizures and he mourned when, after only being with her for three weeks, Bear crossed the Bridge. We pulled another dog from death row to give him a companion more his speed. Dixie was thought to be around 8 years old. Turned out, she was more like 4, but they got along well, except at dinner time.

Doc, Peanut and Cashew

We celebrated his first Thanksgiving with us by giving him turkey and mashed potatoes. We weren't concerned about his diet and we thought this would be his only Thanksgiving with us. He cowered from the food at first, but as he realized that we weren't going to beat him for eating it, he dug right in. When he finished, he had mashed potatoes and gravy all over his beautiful beagle ears.

We celebrated his first Christmas with us, giving him whatever we had for dinner and giving him a brand new collar with a name tag; he wore it proudly.

We took him back to the vet for a checkup and the vet shook his head and laughed. He couldn't believe that Doc was doing so well. He was a favorite in the office for his cheerful demeanor and his baying. He was always happy to see new people and loved our vet. Even with his bad hips and knees, Doc always managed to jump up like a pogo stick and he always made the vet laugh.

We celebrated two more Thanksgivings and Christmases with Doc, thinking each would be his last. He was here for the birth of Peanut and Cashew. He loved the twins (hey, Doc recognized a good food source when he smelled one) and they loved him. They fed him crackers and cookies and anything else they could get their little hands on.

He lived three years longer than anyone expected, but his heart finally gave out last week. He is now at the Bridge with Bear, Nikki, Sparky, Night, Runt and Zeus. Run free Beagle Boy; let your ears fly in the breeze and bay to your heart's content. Your heart is now whole again, your legs are now strong, your eyes can see and your ears can hear. You were only with us for a short time and as much as I wish it could have last much longer, I know you were tired and you were ready. I'm afraid you tried to tell us that you were ready and we missed it. For that I am sorry. I hope that the years you spent with us were good years for you and that you knew you were loved and cherished. I will see you again one day. Until then, whenever I hear a goose, I will think of you and will smile.

Update on BIL Bill

Hi, everyone.

Lee called about an hour ago to let me know how this week was. Bill has gone downhill, must use his walker to get around, has been quite confused and "turned in on himself", spending a lot of time in his chair with his head back and his eyes closed. His last good day was last Monday when he went for a teeth cleaning and then he and Lee stopped for lunch. He had a nap when they got home and was really confused after he woke up.

The six months that the doctors predicted is getting close.... January 6th, which happens to be my birthday.... that's how I remember.

Two-thirds of the way to a diagnosis

The blank spots aren't any better, but I've now seen Dr. Michael and Dr. Streit (rheumatologist)... just have Dr. Trent left. And I don't have to go on Remicade, Dr. Streit has me on Methotrexate and folic acid. We're starting off with oral Methotrexate, but if it causes too much nausea I can go on injectable and give it to myself. But this week wasn't bad. And Dr. Streit said "Try to go on the basis that these problems are cause by the Plaquinal, not AMD until you find out differently". So I'm trying. <s>

I haven't been doing much on the computer or much reading. Television is a little easier, likely because it's so much larger that the blank spots aren't so noticeable. But Pat suggested I set up my larger monitor (the laptop monitors are pretty small) to see if that helps. So I'll do that, just have to get the cord from the storage unit.

Oreo, Pit Bull Euthanized

Oreo, a one year old pit bull, was thrown from a six story building last year. He suffered broken bones and internal injuries. The ASPCA rescued him and nursed him back to health. Then they decided after "evaluating" him that he was too aggressive and euthanized him. This was after the Pets Allive Sanctuary in NY offered to take Oreo and work with him If they found he was too aggressive they would give him a home a the sanctuary for the rest of his life. The ASPCA refused. Why? The story can be found on www. Petsalive.com.

Every Monday evening a growing network of people all across the nation, and in other countries too, light candles in memory of their departed pets. It is a very healing ritual with no adherence to any religion or creed, just a simple lighting of candles to bring us all together. Some gather to light their candles in chat room, others prefer to read the ceremony in their homes, knowing they are joined in spirit to others lighting candles for the same healing purpose.

We also gather the names of beloved pets and their people, and keep them in a single file, so that all our thoughts and prayers can focus on them. If you have a pet who is sick, or who has recently passed "Over the Rainbow Bridge," and you'd like him or her to be remembered on our list, please just post a message here in the "Candle Ceremony" forum.

In honor of all the homeless, forgotten, abandoned, abused animals. For the nameless furchildren who gave their lives for others, for research and as a result of humankind's inhumanity. May the Higher Powers that be forgive the cruelty. We light this candle for them.

As our lights shine brightly through the galaxy, may the angels smile upon us, and know that for a brief moment, we have put aside worldly differences to bond as ONE.

CLOSING:

I have sent you on a journey to a land free from pain, not because I did not love you, but because I loved you too much to force you to stay.
