Perfect Dog for the Obamas
Rescued “golden doodle” in The White House would send strong message to future pet owners

Here’s the perfect solution to the Obama family dog dilemma.

Two golden doodle puppies from Missouri fit the Obama Family’s criteria for “First Dog” perfectly. Described as having a “ridiculous amount of adorable,” the standard poodle, golden retriever mixes, who were rescued from a puppy mill, are patiently waiting at their foster home in Colorado Springs for a call from The White House.

“Our two Golden Doodle Girls—Stella and Susie—are only four months old and waiting for a loving home—and The White House would be just fine with them,” said Theresa Strader of National Mill Dog Rescue. “They were not in very good shape when we got them; they had various infections including pneumonia, which is common with dogs rescued from puppy mills. But now they are in perfect health and are ready to get on with the rest of their lives.

National Mill Dog Rescue often partners with Best Friends helping to find homes for dogs—usually purebred animals—rescued from puppy mills, large scale commercial mass breeding operations that supply pet shops across the United States.

“Puppy mills are out-of-sight, out-of-mind with the general public,” says Julie Castle, director of community programs for Best Friends Animal Society. “If the Obamas were to adopt Stella or Susie, it would go a long way toward educating Americans about the conditions in puppy mills, which will decrease the demand for these dogs in pet shops.”

Best Friends’ national campaign against puppy mills made the headlines recently when the management of the upscale mall, The Beverly Center, announced it was terminating the lease of “Pet Love,” a store that sold puppy mill dogs for thousands of dollars. This followed months of peaceful, informational protests by Best Friends and other animal welfare groups.

The adoption of Stella and/or Susie would go a long way toward sending a strong message to current and future pet owners: Adoption, coupled with effective spay-neuter programs, enables abused, abandoned dogs to obtain a new lease on life and helps control pet overpopulation.

Strader said, “After helping Stella and Susie to become healthy, their foster family here in Colorado Springs has taught them so many new things. They are both really smart, in just one week they have already learned the basic commands; come, sit, lie down and stay.”

Stella and Susie are housetrained (which should put White House housekeepers at ease). “Stella is more laid back with a very sweet and outgoing temperament but happy to have several naps a day,” Strader added. “Susie is a bit more of a wild child - very energetic and a bit nosy, but also very loving and sweet.”

“We truly believe that adopting either of these darling girls would be a great choice for the First Family,” Strader added. “They definitely had a very difficult beginning but are perfect models for what can be achieved when tender, loving care is given to animals in need.”

Oh. My. Gosh. I'm partial to the four legged kids anyway but they are simply adorable. The possibility that the next First Dog might come from National Mill Dog Rescue makes my heart swell. I'll bet Lily is watching with great anticipation!

OMG they are adorable! I hope the Obama's ADOPT and send a good strong message to America.

Rescued from a puppy mill, mixed breed, survivors of trauma and illness, still puppies and absolutely adorable. What little girls wouldn't be thrilled with one (or both?) of these darlings? Has anyone sent photos to Oprah to pass along?

I sent the link to this article to Obama's website www.change.org. I also included the following link to local doodles in rescue (PA, MD, VA) and in need of homes:

please NO! As much as I love Goldens because I have one and volunteer with Golden Rescue, I do not think this is the right choice. Everyone thinks this produces the temperment of the GOlden and the non shedding coat of the poodle but this is no guarantee. In my experiece the gentle temperment of the GOlden doesn't come out but the crazy, dominance of the poodle. Also, because this seems to be the "new" designer dog I worry that this will encourage more breeding as others try and get one. it would be better if the rescue dog had more breeds mixed in that are hard to copy.

The word is that they have decided on either a labradoodle or a portuguese water dog, so the GDs seem perfect. I think they should take both. The White House seems awfully big for just one dog. Plus there are two girls, so how to decide where the dog sleeps? This way each of the girls gets a bedwarmer!

I have the PERFECT solution for the Obamas...a Pot Bellied Pig, like our Sprocket!!!

They are considered hypoallergenic, are very clean animals when allowed to be (contrary to popular misconceptions), extremely intelligent (more so than dogs actually) and quite easy to house train. There are even pig-specific pools so that mud isn't needed to cool them when outside in hot temps!

Maybe it's time for another historic change...a Pot Bellied Pig in the White House!!!

Tireless, Yvonne . . . you are tireless in your efforts to educate the world on the virtues of all things pig!

I respectfully disagree with Andrea D. Although she has valid points about designer dog fads, if the Obamas choose to adopt one or both of these Golden Doodles, it would be unfair to the dogs to deny them a wonderful home just to prove a point. And while Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles do have different temperaments, my dog Beau (a Standard Poodle) never had any tendencies toward "crazy dominance." He was a sweet, mellow, loving family dog.

We have a Golden Retreiver and the breed is great with kids. I would be interested on of the puppies myself!

"Crazy dominance" of the poodle. I think these kinds of labels and perceptions are subjective, and depend upon the personalities of the human being. I'm a German Shepherd (including mixes, of course) person myself. I laugh when I hear people describe them as "hard" to train because of their tendency to deliberate on their own! In my view, "smart" goes along with "learns well." I think people with "tough" personalities most enjoy "tough" dogs. Obama even made a comment to Barbara Walters about wanting a dog that is rambunctious. (Digression - did anyone read his autobiography - as a child, he ate dog!)

I HOPE,HOPE,HOPE that the Obamas' adopt one of these dogs and help send the right message to the public. If I could have another dog (we have two and aren't allowed any more in our development) I would love to have one of these or one of so many who need homes. PLEASE President Obama help get this message out.

If they don't adopt one of these - we WILL. I am serious!

Posted 22 Jan 2009 11:47 PM by MarciaPeters
Please, this is a TERRIBLE idea! Nix it now! It would make these so-called designer dogs more popular than ever, thus ENCOURAGING puppy mills, which are where they come from. People will see and love the mix far more than they'll absorb any message about puppy mills or rescue adoptions. I want to see the Obamas a rescued "pit bull," America's family dog. Can you imagine the impact that could have on dog fighting, if the President took a stand against it? He may be the only person with the respect & moral authority to reach those who fight dogs.

Posted 23 Jan 2009 12:07 AM by ajmom
It will be wonderful if the Obama's rescue ANY dog, regardless of the breed, however, I agree with MarciaPeters--this idea would make these designer dogs even more popular and perpetuate the puppy mills and other breeding. Whatever dog they rescue, let's hope it is emphasized that they rescued the dog and did not go to a breeder or pet store.

In this part of Montana, we have two breeders closeby that raise Goldendoodles, and Labradoodles. They are asking a whopping $1500.00, more than most purebred dogs cost. One of the disadvantages of the Doodles is that their hair just continues to grow, and from what the groomers say, are a nightmare to keep untangled. Looking at a lot of maintenance. But very, very cute.

Let the Obamas pick out their own dog, whether
they go to a shelter or rescue group or buy a dog
from a breeder or even a pet store. It is THEY,
not the rest of the world, who have to live with that
dog, so....it is THEY who have to feel a special
affinity with whatever dog they take. No one can put
in place for them what they don't feel themselves.

Best Friends is doing great rescuing and rehabbing
animals like that remarkable blind horse. Best
Friends should continue to do what it does best,
instead of trying to force unwanted matches between
dogs and owners.

I have a Goldendoodle! Rescued from the now closed largest puppy mill in Wisconsin, Shaggy is the best dog I have ever had! After spend his first weeks recovering from Parvo, he has grown into a smart, super friendly young dog. He has another dog and a cat for siblings and I have not seen any "crazy dominance" in him. He shares toys, treats and his food bowl with the other animals. He needs grooming every six months to keep his coat in line, but I have far less hair from him than the other dog (or cat) all over everything.
Let the Obama family decide on whatever dog they want, pure bred, designer, or mutt ( by the way, a couple of years ago, a doodle would have been a mutt ) I am glad for my choice and would do it all again in a heartbeat!

Posted 23 Jan 2009 8:05 AM by maryaliceshepherd
The Obamas were definite about adopting a shelter dog last fall and I believe they will follow through on that promise. They are a wonderful family and these special pups will bring them years of love and devotion which, I suspect, will be returned to the dogs many times over. A win-win situation for all!

Posted 23 Jan 2009 8:34 AM by GStringer9
People need to understand that a labradoodle, puggle, cockapoo, etc. ARE mutts. They are mixed breeds. People who think they are getting a purebred dog are sadly mistaken and perpetuate the misery of puppy mills. These are beings with senses and emotions not accessories! Go to a shelter and get a MUTT. You won't be disappointed!

Posted 23 Jan 2009 10:37 AM by Libertina
I am very involved in rescue/transport, but at this time I think the Rescue community should leave the Obama's alone and stop trying to shove rescue dogs at them. They have said they will get either a shelter or rescue dog, so why can't we all just sit back and give them a little space. Obviously, they will keep their word to their daughters, however, in case nobody has noticed, a family dog is probably not at the top of the list of priorities that President Obama has to deal with at this time. Also, the time frame of March or sometime this spring was mentioned. For the sake of any dog that might be adopted, as well as the family, quit being so pushy and give this family some time. Pam L.

It's great that Best Friends keeps this issue on the front burner. They DID say they would pick a shelter dog, but later Obama back-peddled a little and said that while his first choice would be to go to the shelter for a mutt, he had certain issues because one of his kids had allergies.

If pressure isn't kept on him, he may end up getting a dog "from a responsible breeder" -- so I say -- keep up the pressure, Best Friends!!

Posted 23 Jan 2009 11:55 AM by eppo50
It would be great if the Obamas' would get a rescue. It will send a message to the US that shelter dogs CAN DO IT! I have 1 puppy mill dog and 2 breed rescue dogs. The best dog I ever had in my life was a shelter mixed breed dog!
BTW, a golden doodle is a mixed breed for now.
Put the pressure on!

I think the Obamas need to stop listening to the AKA and listen to Best Friends. AKA/AKC is only pure bred affiliated and only endorses them. I hope they stick to their word and get a shelter dog. I have gotten shelter and rescues for all of my dogs. I have one pure breed and she is a rescue. Michelle said they would get a rescue dog, let's hope she keeps her word.

Posted 23 Jan 2009 1:31 PM by dethomas2001
These puppies are perfect! How do you get them to know they are available? It could generate donations to all rescue societies. Have you started a petition? In this day and age it's rediciloous to obtain a purebread from a breeder unless you need that for other particular reasons. These labordoodles are perfect should I write my senator?!

Posted 23 Jan 2009 4:34 PM by sedrudge
I just sent an email to President Obama using the White House website. I asked him to consider adopting BOTH puppies. I hope that I receive a response to my email.

Posted 23 Jan 2009 5:29 PM by juliro
I agree with Marcia P - encouraging this particular breed could unintentionally cause a spike in purchases from pet stores/online breeders, just the thing we seek to stop.

I believe the Obamas will keep their word and get a shelter dog. If you do send them encouragement, be positive and patient; this president has a lot on his plate.

I'd prefer to see them adopt a black dog or a pit, as both breeds are difficult to place. But if allergies are an issue, that obviously narrows their field of choice.

I really believe Best Friends is the ideal place to have the Obamas get a dog. May take some time but here is hoping!

Posted 24 Jan 2009 11:46 AM by papmom35
While I applaud Best Friends' campaign to wipe out Puppy Mills, I can't condone "rescuing" dogs from puppy mills. Generally that entails buying them at auction. Doing so puts more money into the hands of the millers and doesn't do anything to stop them. I definitely feel the Obama's should get a shelter or rescue dog from a breed rescue or other rescue group. The dogs that have been "saved" from the millers do need to go to great homes-they can't be punished by not being adopted but we need to be careful of the message we send to the world regarding puppy mills. Obama family, rescue one (or both!) of these adorable puppies.

I agree, either little girl would be perfect for "the first dog." I have a Schnoodle and I think anything with poodle in it is great. My Sophie is a crazy, perfect dog.

Sorry papmom - you need to do your research before passing judgement on Mill Dog Rescue. They are a WONDERFUL organization and it clearly states on their site "we do not pay the mills to rescue their dogs. These dogs are given to our rescue contacts and in turn, given to us. These are dogs that would otherwise be killed as they are no longer useful to the mill."

I think a rescused puppy mill puppy is just perfect. I have a 5 year old rescued Cocker Spaniel and Golden Retriever mix from a puppy mill in Missouri. We have had her for a year and a half. She is a real sweetheart. I also work with Golden's and Retriever Rescues. Rescue dog are the best. I hope the Obama family adoptes one or both of the puppies.

Someone needs to send this information to the Obamas ASAP!!!! These are the perfect puppies, and look, there's two, one for each girl. Come on BEST FRIENDS< send it to the prez.

My sister has one of these dogs. As a matter of fact she is in the Colorado Springs area.

I think the girls would love this dog. I know my neice has a ball with hers.

Good choice!

Have you contacted the White House to let them know about the two Lab a doodles. They are sure cute and would be perfect! And they are rescue puppies!!

From what I have read and heard, the Obamas have narrowed it down to a Portugese Water Dog or a Labradoodle. Seriously doubt they will be searching shelters/rescue groups for either.
