The HiJinx Report
Commentary by Jinx’s office mates
Jinx is a distinguished black and white kitty with quite a unique profile. One of the cats from the Great Kitty Rescue in Pahrump, Nevada, Jinx lost his nose to skin cancer. He's had a "hard paper route,"so to speak, but he's a survivor.
He came back to Best Friends with the final group of Pahrump cats after the compound there was shut down. Jinx lived for a while in one of the communal cat rooms at Best Friends, but the other cats picked on him, maybe because he looked different.
So, Jinx became an office cat, holding court in the office of Best Friends staffers Shelley Thayer and Mary Girouard. He has made quite a bit of progress during his time in Mary and Shelley's office. The first day he came in, he huddled in a tense ball on Mary's desk all day. By the third day, he was much more relaxed -- stretching out his long limbs and snoozing for a while.
He's getting used to the various noises of office life: phones ringing, printers printing, people meeting, dogs barking in the office next door (well, that's office life at Best Friends anyway!). The phone was a bit of a problem at first because it was positioned right near his sleeping spot and would wake him up whenever it rang. He tended to be hissy and growly when that happened -- who wouldn't?
The printer is also near his spot, but he appears to be curious about the sound the printer makes. When it starts up, he stands up and cocks his head as the paper squeezes out.
He's now away from other cats, but Jinx is still getting used to being around people. Shelley says, "His repertoire of noises is limited to hissing and growling. We're trying to expand it to include meowing and maybe even purring."
Though he's much happier being an office cat than being in a room with a bunch of other cats, the office is still sort of a chaotic environment for a scaredy cat like Jinx. So, we would like to find a foster or permanent home for him. Jinx needs a quiet home where someone who has experience with undersocialized cats can work with him lovingly and gently to help him become more comfortable around people.
